What is socket with Depth Stop for?

Hello,

I recently purchased Festool 769126 Depth Stop Chuck for DC UNI FF, PDC which came with Socket SW 8-DC UNI FF (768113) and I am trying to figure out what the star shape is for at the bottom of the  socket?

The festool website says something about use with self drilling screws, but I can't find any with a star head on them.

Without seeing a photograph your description sounds like a Pozi which is a screw head more often found in Europe. Becoming more available in other markets outside Europe such as Australia.

He's referring to the star shape machined deep into the recess of 768113:

I can't see any use for it - it's not quite the right shape to be a torx socket (the points of the star appear too 'pointy') and even if it was, it wouldn't be much use wedged up there past the hex socket cut-out. Not to mention the fact that male torx bolts are never used in situations where you'd need a depth stop.

So, I have no idea what it's purpose is, or if it even has one - it might just be the result of other machining processes when making the bit.

The star shape is the left over swarf from the broaching process that produced the socket shape.

Thank you everyone.  For whatever it is, I have come to the conclusion that it isn't something that would apply to me.  And yes, I did start wondering if there was some cool new gadget I could use with it, so their plan worked Alex.

Is definitely not a torx socket. Wrong shape, no clearance around the socket and no male torx bolts would ever need a depth stop chuck.

Apparently, according to the comments, the socket is to allow the driving of 1/4” socket screws Vs Phillips screws.

Is the end with the torx like feature in the hex the drive end from the drill?  From the video that looks like it's an 8mm allen (male hex) driver tip,  not a female socket.

Looking at the photo in your post that is what I believe it is too. Just the result
of the process of making the bit, not intended for any special fastener.

The manual just says, it's a driver for hex head bolts/screws. The star shaped cutout above the hex isn't mentioned, maybe to allow tolerance for dust, swarf or debris?

There is a 1/4" version and 3/8" version.

The male hex side fits in the machine, the female side takes bits with 1/4" or 3/8" shaft?
