I'm board here at work on a rainy day so I thought I'd ask. What's your favorite wood and why? I personally love Maple Burl and Elm Burl. Waterfall Bubinga really hits the top of the list........Got some very unusual Shedua too. Now I'm confused. :D

I haven't seen a burl that I don't like. ;D  Especially for turning.

As far as furniture woods, I like the quilted and curly figured wood.  Maple seems most common, but I've got a board or two of curly cherry and walnut also.

Tom.

I'm just now scratching the surface of all the 'new' woods for me. Since I moved here it's been a joyride checking out all the different Australian woods. I like karri quite a bit, I like blackbutt, redgum. All can have figure, and can generally speaking range from blonde to dark brown through many shades of red. (not the blackbutt so much, that's mostly in the blonde range). Karri in particular, can have some fiddleback that will trip your head out if you stare at it for too long. I'm working with big slabs of Himalayan Cedar right now, it's pretty soft, very aromatic, can have beautiful figuring but the stuff I have has a lot of knots. Not that that's a bad thing.

How about this:

Fiddleback pink ivory.  This piece has been hidden away for a while and probably will go back to its hiding spot.  I acquired it in remembrance of my mom who was also from South Africa.  She was the mechanical one in the family and the source of my interest in woodworking.  She loved to write and later in her life when she was bedridden I made her a pink ivory pen.  She slept with it under her pillow.  I might just use the rotex and polish it up like in the demo.

Bill, I've seen some incredible examples of both figured redwood and redwood burls that were absolutely breathtaking.

WOW those are some beautiful pieces on that site. That pink Ivory is incredible too. I'll post some pics of A little of my inventory soon.

Funny you say that. I sometimes handle it and talk to it. That way it'll tell me what it wants to be.

Bill, i sometimes get caught talking to the plants I'm working with.  I tell the customer (who caught me) "As long as you don't her the plants talking back to me, you are all right."  ::)

Used to work for a guy who told me "Now Jess, let me explain something - there are two kinds of wood:  cherry and firewood." :D

Absolute all time favorite is wormy curley maple.  Very hard to find.

Early in my teaching career a local lumber man would call us when he was running stock for David T. Smith and he'd let us cherry pick his stacks before it was delivered.  That was where I discovered and fell in love with wormy curley maple.

(Betcha didn't know that, didja David)  ;) http://www.davidtsmith.com/newsite/learn_furn.asp

I also love curley maple, "flame" cherry and quarter sawn oak.

.....again apologies for poor photo....

I would have to say Waterfall bubinga.  I also really like tiger maple and a nice dark piece of walnut with pinks, purples, and oranges is tough to beat.
