Metabo 18v  MKS 18 LTX 586.5 steel cutting saw and two blades, just came, turns out it comes with an edge guide and better yet comes with an attachment that allows running on guide rails, according to manual, Metabo has a 310cm/122" rail as well as shorter versions.  I've been using a 55" Makita rail for my Metabo concrete saw.  Tool options are amazing anymore, no need to make plywood guides, making my 50 year old SKillsaw 8 1/4" feel really old!

Can’t figure how old mine is. It looked about thirty years old when bought it about fifty years ago. It has a huge quiet induction motor and draws 15 or 16 amps.

Then something else has to change because the bearing won't fit over the 8mm shank

Then there is the crazy thing that Whiteside did, so you could have a 1/2" pattern bit with a 1/2" shank.....the cutter head unscrews from the shank, with the bearing trapped between.

I know they would be far more knowledgeable than I with these, but in my head I'd be thinking what happens when you switch between conventional and climb cutting and hit some particularly hard spots?
The load against the tooth is still the same direction, so it can't unscrew. I "assume" that the cutter section "shoulders" against the shank end, but yeah, the potential is there for it to get real tight.
Those tiny flats on the cutter side don't inspire confidence either. I hope I don't ever need to get it apart, that's the sharpener's challenge.

I have a set of Marples chisels that I purchased about 30 years ago on sale.  I have no recollection of what I paid, but I must have thought it was a very good deal because I don’t frequently use chisels.

Mine say that they are made in the UK.  I believe they are currently made in China.

My recollection is that Stanley Tool owned Marples.  Now I see the Irwin brand attached to the Marples name.

Does anyone know what corporation currently owns Marples?  And where are they manufactured?

Stanley B&D owns Irwin which in turn owns the Marples trademark. Unfortunately, they’re made in you know where now. Interestingly, the Stanley Fat Max chisels I’d bought recently were made in England.

I've been trending towards using gages/story sticks rather than measure & mark/set a stop whenever possible, it's getting me the last ~half mm I can't seem to nail repeatably otherwise. Was looking for new/different options for story sticks when I stumbled on this.

Lowes has the Kobalt version of the WP Story Stick on clearance, 24" ($10) and 48" ($30). I cleaned out my local store.

The extrusion is identical, as are the tabs. The end stop is very close but clearly came out of a different injection mold. I assume WP either provided the components or private labeled them for Lowes. Pricing is odd, some google searches showed full price and others the closeout price.

Yep, I can order it at the clearance price but not available in the store. The 24 can't be ordered, in-store only. Goofy.

Ordered one 48"  should come in handy

Or the reverse: WP white-labeled their own name onto the ones they sell, similar to the Semble Clamps.

I don't think there's anything especially proprietary about that extrusion shape; it looks identical to the double-t-track extrusion that Woodcraft sells as well under their Woodriver label.

I had had the Veritas edge trimming plane box for about a decade...with no plane in it. The other day, a good friend of mine, in his 90s, told me he was moving into a retirement home, and practically all his tools had to go. As soon as he mentioned the edge trimming plane in BRONZE, I opened my wallet without a second thought. Both the bronze plane and box have been discontinued.

I also got these discontinued items from him: Pony spring clamps (made in USA) and Veritas handscrews.

One day, when I move into a retirement home, the lucky fellow who gets my plane will get it with the box! ;D

Seems backward doesn't it? The small, easy to ship one, is only in store. Is the 4' version a single piece? My local store had one of the 2' ones, but they didn't have to other.
I got the 2' version for the $9.95

Totally

Sounds crazy, but perhaps all the shorter ones were already distributed to stores and they don't have any to ship thru their distribution network?  Probably not - that would make too much sense in this crazy world.

I have had Woodpeckers version, short and long for a long time.  The extended finger’s were handy measuring wall and beam widths as well as equidistant layouts

I've had the WP version in metric for years & only recently started using them. This all started with me trying (1) to recall if I bought those "caliper" arms (2) if I did, trying to find them and (3) giving up and searching for either the arms or another setup to buy.

I really only bought them because they were on sale and I figured I'd use the tracks for some other jig. I'm still probably going to be forced to buy the other arms so I can finally find the ones I probably already have minutes after receiving shipping notification...

[attachimg=2]I bought a corner chisel, because I can’t find the one I bought a decade ago.

Actually I bought two because the first one is junk. The bad one is a Timberline, owned by Amana. I wanted a router bit frame ToolsToday and it didn’t cost enough for free shipping so added the corner chisel.

The good one is by Whiteside, bought from Woodpeckers. Huge difference.

If the pictures don’t come through, the Timberline is duller than a nail. The Whiteside is sharp, just needs some burrs honed off.[attachimg=1]
