What Software do you use?

I'm a wannabe cabinet maker...

If you mean you want to be in business as a cabintmaker, then Sketchup will probably fall short since you can't generate a cutlist for the parts you need to make.  Ecabinets, KCDw, CabinetVision will allow you to design, render, print cutlists, and output your design to CNC (with the right software version).

If you want to design and build things as a hobby then Sketchup will do fine.

There is a very nice plugin for Sketchup called Cutlist (link) that does a nice job of generating cut lists and laying out the cuts. I can't say how it compares to other offerings, but I just did a design in Sketchup for some built-ins I'll be starting soon, and Cutlist did a nice job of telling me what pieces I will need to cut, and how many boards/sheets I'll need.

I am a designer at Harley-Davidson, we use Pro/ENGINEER, this is an awesomely powerful tool. It is a complete solid modeling tool from which we can make 3D solid models as well as perform functional analysis prior to real-world testing. We can machine models from billet or have SLA/SLS made by rapid even super rapid prototype houses, literally over night. Many parts are testable and functional. I have also used AutoCAD for many years excellent and user friendly for 2D applications. I have taken several Industrial Design classes but still find it easiest to marker render. Is Sketchup easy to catch on to? Cost?

Please and Thanks for your insight

Sketchup has a learning curve, but nothing like what you are used to dealing with.  The basic version is free.  There is a professional version that is available for about $500.

You can go here to download either the free version or the trial Professional version:  http://sketchup.google.com/
