What's the best studfinder.

I've got an older studfinder that is not what I'd call super accurate.  I've drilled enough holes into the vacuum of space to recognize that my current studfinder is not exactly fully up to snuff.  The money I've spent on patching putty would probably be much better spent on a really good Studfinder.

What are you guys using, and what do you think is the best? (like Festool quality best)

Frank - I don't personally have one, but this one is supposed to the king of stud finders. It's from Franklin Sensors

Been using a magnetic stud finder for years - it has never lied to me once.  Any 1" rare earth magnet will work - the Hanson from Amazon is also nice.

Agreed on the magnet.  You can also tie a nut to a string and attach it to the magnet to act as a plumb bob when the screws are higher than can be easily eyeballed.

A tape measure. 

Determine which side of the outlet box has the stud.  Do that with another box on the same wall.  If the measurement is divisible by 16 then your studs are 16" on center.  Simply measure from a known stud to locate the other studs.  This may not work when you get close to corners or under windows.

Best way is to find one like Greg says and then measure.

I just picked one up at Costco.  It worked great on the display but I have not tried at home yet.  It shows both sides of the stud at the same time.  Appears to be pretty slick.  I have never had good luck with the other ones sold at HD.

Find nails in trim (baseboards) check recept's for stud side, my knuckles an ear works really good.

Check YouTube and read the reviews.  Depending on the type of work you do, it may be practical.

I think you are correct.  I just went out and looked and it very close if not identical.

That little Hanson magnet is the best 8.99 you'll ever spend. I bought them for all our guys because the find the nails or screws easily and in the most reliable manner.
