What's the best studfinder.

I use the Franklin 710 (better than any other electronic stud finder, ever), then double check with the Hanson magnetic one -- they work well together.

That's the decision I've made, thanks to the responses in this thread! [smile]

Ordered both on Amazon.

Cheers,

Frank

That made me chuckle! :)

Actually, the stud finder did Ok...it was my bad thinking I had a 3 1/2" wide stud :)

I've got an older studfinder that is not what I'd call super accurate.  I've drilled enough holes into the vacuum of space to recognize that my current studfinder is not exactly fully up to snuff.  The money I've spent on patching putty would probably be much better spent on a really good Studfinder.

What are you guys using, and what do you think is the best? (like Festool quality best)

Cheers,
Frank
How much money do you want to spend ?? I have this one.

Late to the party.  For ease of use, and price point the Franklin studfinder gets my vote. Mine has proven very repeatable. That and a Hansen(sp?) magnetic studfinder, and you are pretty well set. Otherwise IMHO you are looking at the kind that peak(photo type image) into the wall. Not sure what they run now, but when I looked, the cheapest was $500 to $700 US.

Good choice. I'd add the Hanson magnetic stud finder as a backup/ confirmation tool. For $9 not a bad investment.

Find nails in trim (baseboards) check recept's for stud side, my knuckles an ear works really good.

That's been my way.  I bought a stud finder once, used it once. the next time I needed it, the battery was dead so i had to go back to the old method of knuckle drill.

The REAL king of stud finders is this Bosch Wallscanner D-tect150 Professional.  I have the Milwaukee and an older Zircon MultiScanner.  Plus with this in your shop your Festools won't feel like they;re slum'n.  Don't have it yet but it's on my list.

[size=14pt]Agree Warner and Tinker.

I inherited a few tools from my carpenter/boat builder father and grandfathers. One of them was a good set of knuckles. Whilst I cross check with a higher end Stanley Model, my knuckles are usually right.  [big grin]

At the Hardware I work PT, one of the 'naughty' female sales assistants always personally checks if a stud finder is working before the sale.

On the male customer!  [eek]  [smile]

My wife's a good stud finder, she found me afterall [big grin]

Actually hilti have a new one out, it supposed to detect everything, no idea on price. Do you get hilti in the states?

Franklin is great.  Agreed on knuckles  and receptacles.  Modern houses just look for drywall screw pops...

I have a Zircon OneStep Multiscanner i520 that I bought at Home Depot a while back.

http://www.zircon.com/products/center_ms_i520.html

I have found it works well but I always double check by tapping on the drywall with my knuckles.  My biggest complaint about the unit is that the viewing angle of the LCD display is very limited.  You have to be looking pretty much straight at it.

Before purchasing the Zircon I had some cheap units that weren't worth the plastic they used to make them.

Both my new Franklin 710 and Hanson mag units arrived today.

Testing the Franklin was awe inspiring. What a tremendous difference from the crappy Zircon I've been using for years!! Flawless!!  Don't even have to "slide" anymore.  Far more accurate for finding the center of a stud. Excellent!!

Thanks for the recommendations...I feel I now have Festool-level quality for a studfinder! [thumbs up]

Cheers,

Frank

Anybody use one of these:  http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCT410S1-12V-Inspection-Camera/dp/B0043XX89K/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

After my "mishap" I am considering a pinhole camera of some kind to inspect inside the wall-

I have this one:

I can't believe how much I use it. It's one of those eye-opening purchases!

And thanks for reminding me - it is currently lying in a tool drawer, but I need to get it into a systainer.

That looks pretty slick.
