What's up with people buying festool stuff on ebay and paying more than new from a dealer

Right now there is a ETS 150/3 EQ SANDER thats up to $290.99 with $25.00 shipping. mcfeelys an most dealers have it for $285.00 with free shipping.

I see this all the time on ebay an don't get it

Yeah, I've wondered the same thing. I look occassionally to see if there are any deals. Often times new stuff sells for more than you can order it from BobM or McF. Used stuff sells for so close to new that I just don't see the value in it.

It could be people from other countries like Canada.  With the Canadian dollar stronger than US. Dollar and limited availability inventory, it could be a good deal for them.

Even so the listing i am referring to is $290.99 with $25.00  shipping in the lower 48 . I would think it be more to Canada. 290.99+25.00= $315.99 and it's got a day left  that's close to what you can get it Canada for.

The first place i found in Canada selling festool had for it $399 cad with free shipping. $399.00 cad = $328.00 usd

I see this all the on time ebay go figure

I once asked a bidder on ebay about an item for my other hobby, model trains, why he was paying more on ebay than he would if he went to his local hobby shop and bought or ordered the item.  He did answer me and I found the answer intereresting for what if may be worth. It may also apply in this case.

He said that he realized he could get it cheaper at his local hobby shop, but their stock and service sucked so it would take weeks for him to get it that way. Then he added that he was already 74 and was perhaps in more of time hurry than some younger people may be and that the money difference was not an issue for him...it was all about getting it quickly and getting on with it while he still could.

How can you argue with that reasoning....

I wondered about this behavior for years. Then, when I built a new home in an isolated mountain town, I started to value access more than I ever had. Like the elderly man you communicated with, simply seeing and getting my hands on an item was worth a bit extra.

Added to that is the auction mania that drives prices higher than one (in a calmer state of mind) would ever be willing to pay.

Since the introduction of the Domino system, I suspected that the worth of my Lamello Biscuit Jointer would drop. And sure enough, in the last 18 months, prices on eBay have fallen about 30 percent for Lamellos.

This is a copy an past from another post entitled  Half Ass Service

I order from mcfeelys right before the last price increase. I spent $3644.00 with free shipping order on Tuesday got my 265lb  pallet on Friday. The only thing missing was 118" rail that came the next week from festool.

Needles to say i was impressed [/color]

If i Cant get a pallet of tools delivered in 3 days. And this and other auctions has a few days to go it makes even harder to understand

It can also be that the bidder may be close enough to pick-up the item and therefore not pay shipping, so the cost is not as much as we might think.
Of couorse the Economist in me still says there is the real and opportunity costs of having to go and pick up the item...LOL

there was a live.com rebate program for a while where you got cash back on purchases made after searching from live.com.  I had a guy give me full retail for my ETS125 and my RO125.  He then got about 160 back from MSN.

That would make sense but this was $5.99 over retail. Also this is a bid auction live rebate has to be buy it now

I personal would rather wait 3 or 4 days to get from reputable dealer.

I wish i could find some deals on ebay for festool. but if idiots are willing to pay at or over retail for used or previously owned i guess thats out.

dont forget matt, the people who you call idiots are enabling people like me to sell my second hand festools and upgrade to new festools for very little cost.

i do agree with you to a certain extent and  i understand what you are saying but i consider these people saviours rather than idiots.

heres 2 examples...   festool atf 55 with 2 rails and 1 joining bar.  i paid AU$800, 8 years ago.   i sold it for AU$810.

festool sander es 150/5. i paid AU$440, 9 years ago.   i sold it for AU$390.

some may say they are idiots, i think they are great.

It is interesting that some people seem to want the Festools but don't want to have to pay full price for them.  Is this an issue of value?  I don't think so. Or have people just become so used to not paying retail that they feel that they are paying too much if they pay retail. There are lots of pricing schemes in use that we encounter everyday.  Perhaps one of the most interesting is the convenience store where things cost more than almost anywhere else yet we still buy them.

In the retail furniture business the formula for pricing was 2.2 times cost is the "retail" price with an often large discount give from there...perhaps 50 to 75 percent discount.

So, would people feel better about the cost of Festools if they raised the retail prices 15 or 20 percent and then discounted them down the same amount?  Would this be more of what we would expect from Lowes or Home Depot?  Are most sales prices just a game that the retailers play.  I know of one retailer that will just put a Sale sign on items and never change the prices, but people go for that word sale...  If you look at some of the catalogs and flyers that are sent out by some of the larger woodworking retailers you will see the items in the flyer and sort of assume that they must be on sale yet they are often not offering anything different than their everyday pricing.

Best,
Todd

We get it here too on UK ebay I am always on the look out for a Festool bargain on Ebay and so far have never seen one, gives you great confidence if you ever have to sell any of your kit you know youre gonna get a good price.

When I worked at a marina in Florida running their parts department we could special order parts catalogs with and percentage added  onto the list prices so that we could give "discounts" to our customers.  I wouldn't be shocked to see that this goes on in some industries today.

Yup, I think I asked the same question about 2 years ago.  Gives you a warm fuzzy feeling when buying new Festools knowing you can sell them for very near what you got them for!

And speaking of selling tools, I'm going to be unloading some of my older Delta tools, most likely on SMC.  I'll let you know when they are there.

36" (I believe) cast iron jig saw with stand, bought at school auction about 15 years ago.  And my faithful Delta 9" Home Craft TS.  The motor finally died and it's really a tiny saw, to small for me to use for my bigger projects, but it really is awesome for small things.

Matthew, if I have violated any terms of service, please send me directly to time out!

Yea i Spent $3644 on a bunch of festools a few months ago. And it's nice to know i could get so much for them if i had to.

But For the life of i me could not see paying over retail for stuff on ebay. And there is few more fetool tools i would like to have.

It just looks like they wont come from ebay.

hi matt, you state you spent $3644. is that with 10% discount or do you pay full RRP price where you live.
i am curious how it works there.
here in australia i always get minimum 10% discount when buying any tools.
