Where do YOU store your stuff

My over crowded shop desperately needs some housekeeping to make room for a new toy.

One thing I would like to move elsewhere is some/most of the wood I use for projects.  The only place I have to store this stuff is in my unheated/exposed-to-the-elements shed out behind the house.  This does not seem like an ideal place to store wood, what with the moisture in the air and all.

May I ask where other members of this forum store their materials, if not in their shop?  If you store it,like I may be forced to, what do you do to ameliorate the affects?

My shop is actually a room I carved out of my two-car garage.  It's about... 15x17 and "crammed to the rafters".  [crying]

Well, IF I had rafter, I would be using them as well.

As it is, the "garage/shop" ceiling is sheetrocked and insulated.

The walls have been pretty much taken over by shelving and "support" walls for my collection of "Green".  [embarassed]

Gary,

I had the same probelm when we lived in NJ.  A one car garage and no basement.  The garage was sheetrocked.

What I did was to build square frames from 1x2's about two feet tall and 2 feet wide.  I bolted them to the crossmembers in the ceiling about 6 feet apart.  It worked real well for the limited amount of material I kept on hand.  It would have probably worked better with some extruded aluminum.  Would also work with some of the heavier gauge PVC pipe strapped and bolted to the crossmembers.

I would love to do that.  Unfortunately, my ceiling is only about... 7 - 7.4 feet high.

A few years ago, the attic space over the garage was converted into a dressing room off the master bedroom (great way to pick up a 20x22 room without increasing the house footprint).  So, to install the dressing room the ceiling of the garage was lowered a bit.

I am beginning to think this is going to go nowhere.  [crying]

I know how you feel. My workshop is tiny, you can see it here. I shoved all my wood up on a shelf, the rest of the proper stuff is rotting away in the car port :(

Is there any chance you could post some pics of your workshop so we could see and give you some tips?

the ceiling of the garage was lowered a bit.

You could lower the floor...

If you decided to make it a garage again, you'd have easy oil changes, or front end alignments.

I try to stick to a six month shelf life.  If I grab material off a job (usually extra stuff people are throwing away) or holding on to extra trim or moldings from a job, I either toss it (people in my neighborhood are always scooping it up) or give it away to other woodworkers.  If I can't or won't use it in that period of time, I really don't need it.

Do I regret it sometimes?  Yes, but I have a wife to keep happy!  And she's happy when the garage, i.e my shop is clean.

Also invested in a Triton lumber rack which has really made my life easier.  Great pickup from Rockler for about 80.00.
