Where in Australia can I buy insulation sheets as cutting support?

Hi,

I've seen a quite a few videos where they suggest using foam insulation a sacrificial support when breaking down sheet goods.

I'm just a DIY'er so have asked around hardware stores (Bunnings, Mitre 10 etc) to see if they have anything but they don't.

Does anyone know where I can get this stuff and/or what product name I should look for? I'm located in northern Sydney if anyone happens to know a local supplier.

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about corrugated plastic sheet, the sort that signs are often printed on? Maybe expanded PVC?

You could try these guys http://warringah-plastics.com.au

At least they should be able to point you if not supply.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm talking more about something like a very dense foam (similar to those puzzle-type camping mats or gymnasium flooring). From what I can tell from the videos (sorry can't find one right this moment due to firewall issues) it is around the size of a door.

You are looking for the pink or blue foam such as this, normally 4 x 8 foot sheets (Here in N America).

Let us know how you go - I'd be interested to know how expensive that stuff is.

I called the number on the site and spoke the the friendly gentleman.

The standard sized sheet is 2400mm x 600mm.
The thin sheets are 25mm and 35mm.
I only enquired about the 25mm and it would be $35 per sheet, so 2 of them (to allow breakdown of the standard size panel goods) would be $70.

Pickup from Blacktown, but something might be able to be arranged.

I am wondering whether to just get 2-3 packs of puzzle mats from Anaconda / K Mart / Bunnings at $15/pack... I think that the advantage of the thicker sheets is far better support if you were to cut on saw horses, whereas puzzle mats are cheaper and store away easier.

I'd probably go with the interlocking mats as a first attempt, much easier to get hold of !

The stuff from Blacktown will cost more to deliver than it's worth (for 2 pieces - different if you were getting 100).

Handy resource to know about though - thanks [wink]

Just as a reference, here the 2" thick sheets run between $35 and $40 US at the big box stores.

Thanks Peter!  [thanks] So now I need to do 2 conversions.  [tongue]

That's 50mm thick sheets at $AUD 37.38 - $AUD42.72

Please, no-one tell me how much it is in Euros!  [big grin]

Was the company you tried Austech?  I ran across that name several times while just searching the web.

Yeap - that seems to be the domain at the end of the email address contact.

I will do some more searches under "extruded polystyrene insulation" (now that I know the correct term), restricted to Australia, and if I get any vastly different prices then I'll post it in this thread.
