Which Festool would be most beneficial to build a bed?

I'd consider a lathe, along with a DF700XL ... and I'd make sure there's a decent band saw in there as well.

Seth's HL850 suggestion has promise too if you want a unique finish.

The style of this bed has a massive impact on tool choice, but the fact that the OF1400 will turn a half inch bit means that's covered, be it a slower process than screaming through with a OF2200.

Are you thinking of anything exciting like a pop up TV panel, entertainment or springs and shock absorbers instead of legs?

Also, a RAS may come in useful if you've got some shaping to do?

Hi Kev, I would love to have a bandsaw, in fact I almost bought a Laguna LT18HD this month while they are on sale. I have decided to wait until I move, so that I can have a bigger shop. My shop is in my basement I don't think it would be a good idea to try and get a bandsaw down there and even worse, back out when I move.

I do have a PC7518 in a router table as well.

I'm still not sure on the syle yet.

I have thought about getting the RAS. How long has it been out? It looks kind of out dated, I wonder if there is plans to update it soon.

So after reviewing this thread it sounds like the MFT Table is probably more important to get than a router?

I have my eye on the 1010 but realized at connect how important that table is to the system as well. I do have a vac, but I have been wrestling with whether I get the router or the table first. I have an immediate use for the router, not the table. Sigh...Decisions decisions.

This is what I'm thinking about ordering today: Festool MFS 400, LR32 set and FS1400/2-LR32 rail. Lie-Nielsen "The Plane set" (low angle jack plane, 4-1/2 smoothing plane and low angle/adjustable mouth block plane.) Veritas router plane and fence.

What do you think?

This topic has become mostly a hand tool discussion so I started a new topic in the hand tool thread.

Thanks,

Well, it depends on the bed you are building.  I had the domino loved it.  I would not recommend it for bed rail to bedpost joinery.  Just the lateral strength would not be there.  However, you can use other methods for that.  I have a lot of Green machines and love them all.  I think the most useful to me is the mft3 and my TS55 and the CT33e goes with them all.  I love it.  I've include a link to some shots of an 8 sided pencil post bed I made out of cherry.  I wish I'd taken more shots when I was squaring the rails with the mft.  I made M&T and used bed bolts to hold it together.  It was a Cal-King and when together its a freakin tank.    Anyway, you can't go wrong with the green machines, but it will take time to build the arsenal.  Over the years, I've made a cost of a machine be part of a project cost, so it's not quite so bad.    Might have to spring for a TS75 some day as a nice addition.  I sold my domino when I bought the big stationary Powermatic M&T.  Kinda regret it now.  Anyway have a good one.

Bones, great pictorial!  But why "5" bedposts.

I was wondering if anybody would notice that or the 2"x4" post I used for a dry run.    The 5th is for the possible fubar post.  The 8 sides are tapered by 50 percent and it was very possible that I could get a blowout and that you just can't fix it would stick out like a sore thumb.  The first 4 sides taper and the the 4 are cut on a 45 and that taper is reduced by 50 percent, so its kind of complicated and you can screw it up in a skinny minute.   Thankfully all the sweating and practice was for naught.  With the jig, I litterally knocked them out in 30 min.

It took 2 12/4" x 10' pieces to get that stock and it was close to 500.00.  The four pieces were grain matched so that 5th one is for a FUBAR.   If it happened I wanted a piece that was from the same batch and milled the same way.   You can't tell from the pic's but the grain for all 4 match and rotated to form a chevron pattern.    After sinking what I did into the bed, it was a small sacrifice.    BTW, the 5th post is still in the shop.   I had a niece said I could make her a bed and he would not even mind if the 4th post did not match perfect.    Anyway it was an experience, and now that I have the jigs for the posts, I could whip a bed out in no time.  The most time consuming is milling the post and laminating the bed rails.   I was shocked at how heavy it was.  After assembled and before mattress was put on it, I cannot move it by myself.   Learned a lot about the science of bed building.   Now  if I could get that Maloof rocker down next!   Thanks for the kind comments.

Not sure how long it's been out - but is works extremely well - I can imagine a few tools they'd probably update before they touched the RAS.

So, I just ordered the RAS115, LR32 system, FS 1400-LR32 rail and MFS400, LN 60-1/2 LA adjustable block plane. I was able to order the LV large router plane w/fence last night while the free shipping was going on. I will use the RAS to strip the paint off my cedar garage this spring  [tongue]

Thanks for all the input. I guess I really didn't need the OF2200 or DominoXL to build a bed after all. I have a hard time with my wants and needs, wants usually win out  [big grin]
