Why is there not a Festool belt sander?  It's one of the dustiest tools in my shop!  A 4" X 24" with dust collection from the top would be sweet?  I wonder why?  ???

There is, runs on 220/240V:

Festool Belt Sander

And a nice little planer 220/240V:

Festool Planer

Of course not sold in the USA, but these will work and they will send it for 50.00 USD to the states. They will also sell you a converter to 110V at the same links if you need it.

There is one, it's just not available in North America.

On the other hand, once I purchased my 150 mm Rotex sander and used it in aggressive mode, I gave away my two belt sanders because I knew that I would never need them again.  :)  So, in my opinion, we can't purchase a belt sander here, because there is very little need for one.

Heh,heh,heh. ;)

untypically you can use cheap belts with it too  ;D

Eli,

Many thanks for letting us know that the belt sander that we can't buy take inexpensive sandpaper.  Is this a double-dig with a full twist!?!  Hummmph!    >:(  Go have a Fosters or something!

If you want a very good quality belt sander with EXCELLENT dust collection, try a Makita 9903.  With a $5 Fein hose adapter, you can easily hook it to your Festool CT.

I posted a review on Brice's web site at:http://www.burrellcustomcarpentry.com/subpage36.html.  It also had a sanding shoe available:http://www.makita.com/menu.php?pg=accessory_tbl&tag=acc_sander_belt&cat_tag=176&tbl=3&f=.  If you need a belt sander, I think it's an excellent addition to your Festool system, especially the CT and MFT.

Dan.

I too have the Makita 9903 belt sander, modified with the Fein flexible boot to accept the Festool D27 hose. I've been very happy with it! Dust collection is the best I've seen on a belt sander. The Makita belt sanders are supposed to be pretty durable, as well. When I bought it, I went to my local Thomas Tool and Supply and asked "what is your best belt sander?". When they answered the Makita 9903, I asked them why. They said that they sell a lot of them to local glass shops, that the 9903 was the only sander that they had come across that could stand up to all of the glass dust. Since my purchase, nearly every belt sander review I've come across either ranks the 9903 the best pick outright, or it ties with the Porter Cable. One especially nice feature is the 13' power cord, it works quite nicely with the Festool dust hose!

If you read my review, you'll see that my experience is precisely the same as Tom's.  Dust collection is exceptional, tracking is easy to set, and it maintains its setting.  In addition, one thing that is NOT obvious but is important (IMO) to Festoolians is that the 9903 can be laid on its side or back and clamped to an MFT with the DC hose attached!  Here a couple of pics:

What is funny about this is that a recent Fine Woodworking review of belt sanders gave another sander the nod over the 9903.  And then, the author complained that all of the sanders needed add-on attachments for dust collection and that the dust collection attachments didn't work when clamped to a table!

It's a great sander.

We only send Foster's to people who drink Coronas. ;D ;D ;D

I have a very old much used 9903. It is exellent and of interest this design have not changed in 20 years. I have never hooked it up to my ct 22. Did not think it will be worthwhile as it was made before dust collection was considered important. Is there any other known adapter as fein do not import their vac's here. One more thing, my 9903 is a real high pitched screamer comparable to router in full flight. Is this your experience as well?

Thomas

Consider also that there is less demand for belt sanders these days...the ROS and drum sanders have taken their place in many shops, pro and not pro. I have a very nice Bosch 3"x21". I've used it three times since I bought it many years ago and in all three cases, it was upside down in the bench vice so I could do some careful shaping of a part without uncovering a larger sanding machine in another area of the shop. That said, I bet that the Festool version is outstanding!

Thomas,

I'm sorry to hear that the Fein adapter is not imported in Johannesburg. Regarding noise, I haven't noticed anything significant.

Dan.
