Mark,

There are some members here interested in wooden boats.  I might suggest using the search function and using the words "boat building".  That will get you some threads to look at.  You will also get the names of the members so that you could possibly get some more advice by sending them a personal message if they don't post in your thread.

A bit late in the day, I know.  About 15 years back I had a couple of Mystic Whalers built in Maine destined for an Outward Bound school in South Africa.  They were built by the Apprentice shop in Rockland Maine.  I loved those boats and loved the whole concept, so a few years back I took sabbatical, hired a house overlooking Rockport harbour and had the most splendid time for several weeks building a Susan Skiff.  For me. it was a busman's holiday, but I really had the most energizing time in the shop, building, learning the boat trade and then sipping red wine and whisky overlooking Rockport harbour.  The art galleries in Rockland are outstanding, particularly if you are a Wyeth fan (any one of them).  On weekends you can saunter through to Camden and pretend to live a refined life drooling over the boats laid up in the harbour.  The school is a non-profit organisation and has a range of short and long courses and is the perfect educational break to fire your creative juices.

Oh, and it is the only state in the USA that let me off, not once but 3 times, when caught speeding (ahem due to confusion apparently between miles and kilometres).  Nice people in Maine. (Unlike Texas that jailed me for 3 days for incitement to induce someone to play a piano)

He, seeing as where you come from, you probably have an automatic alert on your computer when the word whisky is mentioned ;D

'Boat Building: A Complete Handbook of Wooden Boat Construction' (by Howard Chapelle) was recommended to me years ago by an old boat builder and in turn I'm recommending it to you...one of the classics.

Cheers,
Rick

Hey Mark,

I've been interested in building one of those old Chris Craft style boats for quite awhile. In fact, when I built my barn, it was sized so I could put a 30' triple cockpit barrel back in there. I grew up water skiing on "The Dragon" (Nacimiento), and my uncle runs one of the biggest
jet boat customization businesses on the 'net, so you might say it's in my blood.

That being said, after building the house, and having to deal with "stuff", lately I've wondered if I really want to build the boat. Would be just
another big expensive hobby, which I don't need with one kid in college and another headed there (I hope!).

So, not sure if I'll ever follow through on it, but it would be a fun piece of woodworking to show off some day.

Of course, my uncle, who deals in hot rod, low profile, "oh my god that thing is loud" boats said of the Chris Craft: "You won't get any p**y with a boat like that!".

Yeah, he's a character.

Anyway, I may scale down my plans to build one of these:

cracker box

Or maybe:

Squirt

Or maybe I'll go green and sustainable:

The Rob Roy

Anyway, I've been known to research things for years before committing, so here's some links I've collected quite awhile ago:

http://www.glen-l.com/
http://www.clarkcraft.com/
http://www.californiaclassicboats.com/
http://www.svensons.com/boat/

Note that the Glen-l forum is a FOG kind of place with forums to help you learn and waste lots of hours doing your research....

Thanks for starting this thread, now I have another thing I would like to build...I love those Chris-Craft's and would love to build one, take it around the lake once or twice and then sell it.
I was supposed to cut the hedge and the grass today, but I doubt that will happen...those classic boats look pretty sexy.

Haha, oh, I'm always here somewhere, just like to pick my moments. Anyway, no, no boatbuilding yet Alan...I bought the book years ago because I was writing a novel with a character who built boats (that's how I got into woodworking actually but that's another story!). As for Daisy, Peter, you're right, she's growing more lovely and more demanding by the day but as they say no pics and it didn't happen, I'll see what I can dig out..!

Cheers,
Rick

One more... how to do it if you work for a full fab furniture factory with CNC machines and boss will let you use it at night....
(and you're also one helluva website builder)
