I have both (different generations). The older, aluminum one is more likely to deform if I drop it on the concrete. The new ones are both stainless, with no regrets.

I sold the original aluminum version because it was too thick and I never used it. [sad]
I've since purchased 2 stainless versions. I like the stainless version, I use them a lot. [big grin]

Seems the consensus is for the stainless.....but what size is considered the most practical? Or, is the complete stainless set ideal?

Here’s my vote...in one photo. [big grin]
Actually check out the marked divisions between the two rulers. One was mfd in 2014, one was mfd in 2016. Those markings are identical, not a point to be overlooked. In the past this was one of the hallmarks of Starrett measurement scales/rulers.

I had gotten the 6" imperial and the 12" combo. The 6" fits in a pocket and is used very frequently.
I also wanted a metric scale (I have very few metric measurement tools) so I got a combo in 12". It is not used often unless I need a quality metric scale. If I'm measuring in inches in that range, I tend to prefer a standard combo square. I have a 16" Swanson that I prefer, having now verified (after accumulating much more expensive tools) it's dead nuts accurate and square.
The 8" size made less sense to me - too small and too big at the same time as opposed to "just right."
