Would you use a 5X30 Domino in 3/4" thick oak?

I am attaching a shelf on a nightstand to 2 supports. The shelf will be attached with 2 vertical Dominos on each supporting piece. Both the shelf and supports are 3/4" white oak. A 5X30 Domino would go approximately 9/16" into the 3/4" thickness of the shelf. Would it be better to use a #4 Domino? It would not extend into the shelf quite as deeply and, since the Dominos are really only holding the shelf in place rather then supporting the shelf, would the #4's be sufficient? In addition, the glue joint of the shelf to the supports is edge grain to edge grain, so that alone would be lending strength.

The #5 should be just fine, I think that the #4's are a little too small and too short.

I think your choice of the 5x30 tenon is a good one. However, my experience with edge grain glue joints is that they have very little strength.

I've never had a problem with edge grain glue joints. End grain if not properly treated can be week.

5x30 or 6x40 Dominos will work in this application. Just make sure if you use the 6's you do a shallow and deep plunge.

Thanks guys. I'll go with the 5's like I originally intended. I think 6's are overkill and I was a little uncomfortable with the 4's because they are so short.
