XFASTEN double-sided tape -- anyone tried it?

The Amazon reviews seem to be so favorable. I had never heard the brand before.

Yes, I bought some recently - very happy with it. Have used it for a number of different tasks, from holding router templates in place, to attaching a power strip to the underside of my workbench.

I've bought 2 rolls of XFasten Double Sided Carpet Tape and used it for woodworking.  It's good stuff.  I imagine their Woodworking Tape would be just as good, if not better depending on the application.

I bought a 3 pack back in 2020 and I'm still on the first roll.

Cons:
- It has a tendency to tear the veneer from my baltic birch when separating templates from workpieces
- More often than not, it left a sticky residue behind

Pros:
- You can get several uses from it if the tape stays on the template and you need to cut more than one piece.

Maybe I got a bad batch as it gets great reviews. I found that it was way too sticky, which is odd since it's designed for woodworking. I've since given the other rolls to my step daughter to use in her craft projects.

I've been really happy with the double-sided tape from Shaper.

I think this is the same double side tape that Shaper Origin sells.

I've been using double sided tape from LLPT for some years now and have been quite happy with it. They say it has been made specifically for woodworking. No idea if that is actually correct, but it does the job. I haven't noticed any significant amount of tearing out of woodfibers yet. It holds quite well, without it being too hard to remove again.

SpecTape paper tape works for me. Like 4nthony, I found the XFasten to be a little too strong and fought with the residue.

SpecTape plastic might as well be called a permanent bond...it is nearly impossible to get off...but the paper seems to be the Goldilocks tape...the right amount of grip and relatively easy release.

I am quite sure I've seen it on Amazon.com as well.

As I said, it does not tear out fibers and does not leave sticky residue when removing it.

One thing that does help is to not pull the tape straight up, but at a shallow angle to the workpiece when pulling it off. Of course that won't be possible when you have taped 2 pieces together.

That's how I peel off the tape too -- at an angle, regardless of what brand of tape it's.

I used to use some stuff that I got from the local woodworking store. They called it "turners tape" and it is great for that, but it's waay too strong for templates. It's not bad about residue, but it can be quite difficult to  separate the parts. There have been a couple of times when I resorted to dripping some acetone along the seam, to get what turned out to be fragile parts separated from the base.
Lately I have been using something I got from Amazon? I just looked at my history and it turns out that it's XFasten. Hilarious. I bought a 4-roll pack of 1/2" in Sept of 21.

The width of the other tape seems a bit more practical, but for me the hpx tape is available at the diy store around the corner.

I also use SpecTape. I probably got it from a local store ages ago and have continued using it since it has a strong hold, but you can shear parts apart pretty easily. Never any residue; usually, I just lift an edge and then roll it up with a fingertip. Really like it. It's the paper one; I never knew about the plastic-backed until this thread. When I looked that version up, it does indicate it's rather permanent.

Coincidentally, just today I received a roll of 1" and 2". I ran out of my 1" and never thought to look for 2" to make backing parts boards for the Origin faster to lay down. Now, if they made a 4" roll  [tongue]

When I first found XFasten, what turned me off from it was that the adhesive is silicone-based. Usually, silicone and woodworking don't mix.

I've been using Intertape 591 & can recommend it for SO/router template use. I did order a roll of 3" XFASTEN to try it out, but only because of the width available. They have  4" also but I suspect I'd be trimming off a lot of excess, 3" seems like a good compromise for what I do.

So I grabbed the 3" tape, it turns out to be the plasticky type that is tough to tear, tends to stretch and disform, better if you cut it.

For my most common use, holding stuff for the Shaper Origin, I much prefer the paper tape that tears easily.

It is sticky stuff, and doesn't leave residue.
