Yarn Storage

Thanks. Material - that was one of my issues. I wanted to use solid pine or plywood but my wife wanted least expensive so purchased MDF. This was not just heavy but extremely dusty to rout the slots in the panels. Although the MDF did take a coat of primer and paint well.

My wife posted this on one of her crocheting sites. She said when she posts the projects she has done she gets maybe 10-20 likes. On this one she got more than 700!

I used my cheapo 2-D drafting program to draw it up.

I used two MDF panels and ripped them into 12" wide strips and then further sized them for the rack.

Slots were cut little more than 1/2 way through the shelves on both pieces to align and lock them in place. I used my WP variable router jig and a router with guide bushing to cut the slots. (I tried using DC but what a mess - there was no cutoff piece since I was using a 1/2" bit. (All DUST!)
I assembled it in my garage/shop on my 4'x'8' work table using confirmat screws. I first put all the shelved together then lined up the outside pieces and router v-grooves to hold the shelved positioned.

I tore it all apart and painted it (should have seen my shop).

Brought all the pieces inside to assemble (it weighs about 200# assembled). Even though I put a little slop in the slots the paint made extra effort for assembly. Then I anchored it to the wall.

I found this site where you can enter your dimensions (or use your mouse to drag on the cabinet), choose material, and enter the number of shelves then it shows you the cabinet and quotes you a price. I entered this 4' x 7' cabinet (but no option for diagonals) and it was over $1500! Bet the place CNC's it from your entered info.
