Your favourite Screw Drive Style

While I prefer Square drive to Phillips head I have had cam out on the square drive if I'm in a rush.  The other like Torx, GRK,etc seem to be the same design with different names?

Torx is a shape GRK is a manufacturer.

And if you drop down the page you will find many more shapes.

Fòr general work, Robertson head in all 3 sizes then conformat for edge attachment. I do not like Phillips head screws.

I'm partial to square drive.  And I think PoziDriv should be outlawed, because I never can tell them from Phillips ...  [big grin]

Out of curiosity, I checked Wikipedia on screw types ... Good grief, it's insane how many screw types there are! So I'll add to my desired ban:  Frearson (Reed and Prince), yet another "Phillips" type of profile. I think my first set of Craftsman screwdrivers 40+ years ago included a Reed and Prince.

Ya that's really annoying  I purchased a Craftsman set 40+ years ago and also received a #1 and a #2 phillips that were categorized by Sears as philips but in actuality were the Reed & Prince configuration. News flash...Reed & Prince actually rounds out philips head screw drive configurations.

I was on board with Robertson screws, but then I got an impact driver with crazy power, and the bit sticks quite a lot. So I would like to try torx now.

Trouble is, I live in a small town, and all they sell by the pound are Phillips. It might be many many years before they get Torx here in the land that time forgot.

HD in my area sells some of the GRK torx. But there are several on line sources that carry most of the line.

The internet is your friend.  You can order whatever screws you want there I hear.  [thumbs up] [poke]

No votes for slot-heads?  I use mine a lot... can never seem to keep track of my can openers.  For driving screws, I like well-fitted Robertson bits.  Torx are good too, and there seems to be less variance in the quality and fit of the screws and drivers.

Pozidriv 1 and 2. Over 90% of screws here is Pozidriv. Other types like Torx are hard to find and more expensive. Robertson is not used here at all, and slotted and Phillips are almost completely on their way out now.

I first came across square drive in New Zealand, they seem to be very common there and I really got to like them.
In the UK we would always use Spax screws if we could, excellent quality screw.
In Aus they do seem to be very behind the times when it comes to screws most just sell Phillips and not very good quality ones at that. I have tried everywhere in Aus to get Spax Screws without any luck, even on line, the choice is very limited and then you got the added cost of postage.

Willy, thanks for the link. I didn't know they could be purchased on the internet.

Previously I had to go from local source to local source to find the size, material and configuration I needed. PITA

I guess I'm just an oddball but I prefer Phillips and have zero problems with them, as long as it is a quality industrial screw and not the soft garbage hardware store variety.

I despise square drive because of the bit sticking in them is worse than annoying.

I never bought any torx but I regularly  have  to back many of them out (as well as square ones) to reposition (fix) misaligned millwork.  The torx screws I've dealt with seem to work well except the head is on the large side which causes problems when a proper countersink is not used, which I see often.

Using an impact, the expensive phillips screws that I use are totally easy to drive and the bit never sticks or cams out and they don't break.

I think the head size will depend on the brand to some degree. I have found the GRK R4s to actually be a bit smaller head diameter than many others.  Probably also depend on the intended use of a particular screw type as well. I have seen another brand ( I forget the name, I used a box and they were also good screws) of torx 'deck' screws in the big box store  that clearly has a somewhat larger head.

GRK screws for 90% of my work. I framed up 3 temporary structures using 2x4 and GRK screws over the last year using the same screws and recycling most of the wood. That means screwing in and out the same 3" plus inch screws with no effect on the head or screw. Being self taping helps the process along nicely. That is quality and I do like their cabinet screws and R4.

Torx 20-25
I think it would be nice if all heads shared the same tip,but I'm dreaming.
Grk gets my vote, then spax, then square drive .

I've been a big fan of square drive for a long time.  I find that when the bit starts sticking it is either "worn out" or I am over torquing.

I also really like SPAX and GRK star drive.

Along the same lines of the BMH post, I've found Torx screws to be the best for cement form work. The drive recess doesn't seem to fill with cement as readily as the Robertson drive recess. And even when the recess does have cement in it, you can just "jab" the Torx driver into the recess and it grips good enough (because the bit is flat on the bottom and the edges are sharp) to remove the screw from the form. Some of the screws I use on cement forms have been re-used 15-20 times and they still work, now that's value added.
