1010 accessories

I have really fallen for Festool.  I took the plunge last spring with a TS55 and then the ETS150/3 and RO90.  Next in line is the 1010.  I have a Bosch 1617 but am getting tired of moving it to and from my router table all of the time, so I am looking for a smaller router to handle most needs and then I can leave the 1617 in the table.  I have settled on the 1010 after reading many posts here, but now am looking for advice on accessories.  I have two main uses in mind beyond normal edging and such:

I just finished a project with tables with edge banding and it was challenging at least to flush trim that with my 1617.  So the angle arm and edging plate are on the list.  Can I use any 1/4" flush trim bit with this setup?

I have about 15+ cabinets to build, so thought I would go for the LR32 system after comparing it to the Veritas cabinet system and other jigs, and also seeing the great videos posted on this site.  It looks complete, any other items necessary?

I was also looking at the edge guide and fine adjustment for the edge guide, but not sure how much I will use this?

Any other advice?  My plan is to go after the 1400 next and permanently attach the 1617 to the router table.

you can use 1/4" shank but not 1/2", which is serious limitation. 1010 looks to week and bendy for a good router. It is basicly Bosch colt with a plunger ad-on.
1400 router is much more stronger, will hold accuracy much longer, will handle much more dificult tasks, less vibrations, can get 1/4" and 1/2" shank bits. It is heavier but still good for hand operations around smalls (if you are a man).

I'm going to disagree with you on this one.  Try one first before disparaging it.  I was pleasantly surprised at how versatile it is for a small router.  It's become my mainstay for use with the LR 32 and the Leigh dovetail jig.  The only thing I'd say is wimpy is the return spring on the plunge mechanism.  It could stand to be a touch stronger.  The OF 1400 is a very versatile router that can handle 1/4", 8mm and 1/2" shank bits, but the OF 1010 seems to be the right tool for use with the LR 32 and the Leigh Super Jig 18.  Dave, if you ever intend to do dovetails or use the OF 1010 for template work, get the Leigh 704R guide bushing plate.  It fits more loosely than the Festool equivalent which allows you to use a mandrel to center the guide bushing precisely.

The 1010 is the most versatile router I own. I use it for everything other then table mounted routing. For edge banding/ edging  there are a couple of accessories you can get to use the router hortizontally. Look at the 2nd video.

If you are doing cabinets the 1010 w/ the LR32 is a awesome combo

I have both the OF1010 and OF1400 and prefer to use the 1010.  In its favour are its weight, and the fact they when trimming hardwood edge banding there is a chip deflector for it (which doesn't fit the OF1400):

The other edge trimming bits do fit the 1400, but it's just too heavy to hold out horizontally.  I've not tried edge banding without the chip deflector but I'll bet you get showered in chips!

Yes, the OF1400 has more power, a better plunge mechanism and can take 1/2" bits, but it's a bit of a beast.

That is the plan, 1010 now, 1400 next year and move the 1617 permanently to the router table.  My choice right now is a trim router like the DeWalt or the 1010, and I just see the 1010 being able to do so much more like the LR32.  I will use my 1617 with my 1/2" bits until I get the 1400.

I have the Leigh Dovetail jig and I bought it originally with the 1/4" cutters and more recently upgraded to the 8mm cutters.  The 1/4" cutters yield too much flex and variability in dovetail size to produce repeatable dovetails in hardwood in my opinion.  Unless the 1010 offers an 8mm collet go with the 1400 or do what I did and get the Bosch which has both the 8mm and 1/2" collets in a lightweight router.

Festool USA sells the OF1010 with both a 1/4" and an 8mm collet. For the Festool LR32 bits, the 8mm shank is standard.

Yes, I own an OF1400, but I own and use many OF1010. Previously I have written countless posts in praise of the OF1010.

I totally agree with those who expect people to actually have used a tool before disparaging it.

Another plus for the 1010.

I've got the 1010 and the 1400 and use the 1010 where ever I can. Yes there are limitations but a Bosch Colt it ain't.

The big plus for me with the 1010 is the use of the guide rail and rods (without the rail) to use as an extended base footprint - this makes edge work an absolute doddle and a pleasure to do.

I have the 1010 and 2200.  I use the 2200 mainly in my table and when I have to route something that I only  have a huge bit to route with.
The 1010 can do almost every hand route operation that I can imagine. I have no need for any other router

What bit are people using with the base plate combo for trimming edging?  I have a Whiteside flush trim bit, does that work okay?

i use a flush trim bit from infinity but any good quality bit will do.

Whiteside and Amana bits are great.  I hear good things about Freud, but have no experience with them.  If you're going to be using any laminates, Amana's No-File bits are great for finishing edges.
