I am having a problem with my 1010 router releasing bits. The collet will not release even when loose. I had to destroy a bit to get it out. Love it when it works but afraid to try it again. Any ideas..............Thanks in advance, Kip

How often have you had this problem, is this the first time? Are you loosening the collet twice?

It has happened the last three times i used the router. I do not attempt to use it again untill I can figure out the problem.

Maybe someone will chime in with a cause/solution, but I would call Festool's service department after 8 AM, PST and speak to David McGibbon.

Your collet may have a two stage release. You are unlocking the first stage when you back off on the collet nut. After free, back off a little more and it will seem like it is tight again. Back off further using the wrench to release bit.

Good call. They all have that 2 stage release, so I assumming, that if Kip had to use enough force to almost destroy a bit, something else must be up.

I agree about the two-stage idea.  When the collet hits  the "second locking" stage, it can seem like it's tight all over again.

I've also heard of bits "freezing" in a collet if you insert the bit too far down, or if you over-tighten the collet.  Not sure if this is a factor in this case.  But if that did happen, what would the solution be?

One "trick" I learned a while back is to drop a suitably sized o-ring (or two) into the collet hole before inserting the bit to prevent the collet from gripping on the radius of the bit shank.
