I am purchasing my first festool product. I need a new sander. Does the 150/5 come with a sample of any abrasives?
Does the sander work virtually dust free without the CT? I don't have the money to buy a CT at the moment.

My 150/3 came with a single sheet of sandpaper. i believe the 150/5 is the same.

While the Festool sanders are good, they are not magic. The only way to remove the dust is to 'extract' it by using a CT / dust extractor. If you don't have it connected to one, all of the dust you generate will end up in the air or on your workpiece - the same as with any other sander.

Hi,

    Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

No abrasive sampler. It will not be dust free without a vacuum, but it doesn't necessarily need to be a Festool vacuum. But you would need a way to reduce the suction on most vacuums.

I just have a rigid shop vac. I guess that is better than nothing. I wish I could afford the CT-mini. It would be great for the podcast.

As Seth indicated, find a way to bleed off the excess suction so you're not clamping the sanding to the work piece. That will allow the sander to float over the surface and help you achieve a better finish. A sacrificial coupler with holes drilled in it should work fine. Typically these sanders require very little suction for dust extraction. It's not uncommon to turn the adjustable setting all the way to minimum on the extractors.

That said the ETS 150/5 is a little more forgiving than some of the other finish sanders, so I don't think you'll have too much trouble.

Almost forgot .....If you use another vac , you will need to make up some kind of adapter to connect to the tool or get a Festool hose.

Seth

The Festool hoses have a rubber type tool end that fits on the tool ports. It is a European standard size.  The part is available as separate piece. So an adapter to connect it to another  hose could be made. Or maybe the hose you have could be adapted to fit.  I know that other FOG members have done this in a few different ways.  I don't know the details off hand.

I don't know about a Rigid vac, but the 27 mm hose fits in a Fein vacuum outlet. I actuall did that before getting a CT. You would still have to deal with the suction issue. While the 150/5 may be more forgiving, a regular vacuum still does creat minor problems when sanding. There is just too much suction created with most vacuums. Some brands come with a "handle" which has an adjustable vent so you might be able to find one that works with your vacuum and the sander. Try a woodworking store like Woodcraft. Depending on the store, they might have a solution. I've found solutions for many strange sizes, but you'd need to be there in-person to actually see if it would fit.

A great alternative if $$ is tight for the hose would be this option - Bosch VAC005 5 meter 35mm. Will work with your Ridgid vac and Festool sander fine. It is not antistatic, but I use this currently with my Domino 700 with great success. You still won't have the ability to decrease the suction unless you do as someone above suggested by using some sort of drilled out coupler. Amazon had it for approx $35 when I purchased mine a few months ago. http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-VAC005-5-Meter-Vacuum-Hose/dp/B0000AV78B

Image shown on item page is actually not correct on the tool end - the one pictured is a hard plastic while the one that you will receive is a softer rubber type shown here - http://www.boschtools.com/Products/Tools/Pages/BoschProductDetail.aspx?pid=VAC005

I have three Fein vacs which have variable suction control but have used cheap Shopvacs and also my M18 Milwaukee cordless with my Festool sanders (RO90, DTS400, RTS400, ETS125), and never had an issue.  All my Festool sanders have a Fein 921072K13 Step Adaptor (Amazon Prime $5.99) attached with the smallest step cut off.

About a week ago I bought a reconditioned, 20% off 150/3 and it came with a 25-piece sample pack of sandpaper.  5 each of 5 grits, ranging from P80-P320.

I've seen a lot of people mention that a non-Festool vac works fine with Festool dust extraction, as long as you put a hole somewhere in the connection so you can reduce the suction.  You'll probably also want to buy some high efficiency vacuum bags for your vacuum.

In the past, sometimes the sanders included sample packs and sometimes not.  So, just by chance, the recon that you got was probably one of the ones that did include a sample pack.

I was going to order it from Tom, but rockler is selling the 150/5 for $325 plus I get 10% off military from them. Everywhere I have seen it for $345.

Are you sure they really have it? It's my understanding that they are no longer a Festool dealer.
