16 hours to build something ugly

This a rolling "Welcome" desk for a church that is 60 miles away. It is on wheels, presumably to move it near the main doors for "events", and out of the way for other times?
The design/shape/feel is okay. I have done lots of very similar units over the years, curved or flat, but with all of the colors available in the world....why this?
At this point, it's a hulking brown monolith. The countertop and upper wall caps are going to be Corian, and that might help it? I'm not sure of the color for that, haven't looked into it that deep. I'm not doing that part. There's another department for that.
I do it in places where it is integrated with the structure itself, but "loose" tops get done across the shop.
It's just blah though. All that work for blah. A lighter color, contrasting color somewhere, something?
The first 4 pics are yesterday's progress. The last are today, done with the exception of the central filler and some final clean-up, once it is down.

Over here, churches were always the "monumental but dark and plain" places. This would be even "extravagant" with all the curves and perfect surfaces ...

One is supposed to introspect and, at most, consider the saints (aka painings/sculptures). Not contemplate the joining methods used for that new table over there. Heh.

That said, I like it.

Got this theory that something sufficiently ugly can turn full circle. Becoming beatiful courtesy of its character.

In this theory, the worst case are those "kinda ugly" things. Not enough raw beaty and not enough character either, stuck in the "No man's land".

Maybe their plan is to add a big logo or something to the front and the brown is there to make the logo stand out?

It would not have been my first laminate choice but I like it much better than the other stuff used on the cubes you posted. That stuff was awful looking... Most churches have a lot of wood and browns going on so that probably influenced their selection either consciously or subconsciously. The good news is for us it doesnt matter as long as the check clears and the bills get paid.

Maybe they have a Jesus logo to add to the center portion.  In gold leaf that would stand out pretty well against the brown leather-look laminate.

Where are you sourcing useable radiata pine plywood? I'm not having much luck finding the better stuff from Arauco these days..

Getting it is not so bad anymore, but the price is still up a bit. It's not as high as a year ago, but not where it used to be.
As crazy as it sounds, most of what you will see me build with plywood (for the foreseeable future) will be either cherry or red oak. Yes, both of those are cheaper than the regular shop-ply.
We just got in 800 sheets. 500 oak and 300 cherry IIRC? Quite a mountain of wood.
