18v DRC Drill

Im interested in the DRC & as a carpenter i think it has plenty of power for 100mm screws  although its not an impact! I don't own an impact drill but i have used them & like the power & the weight of them but working with them for more than 10 minutes my ears my head hurts as i hate that noise. Thats why id lean towards the DRC! With the accessories eg right angled drilling through joists is useful,&screwing

I own a drc ( its slightly shorter than the pdc) and have the top of the line makita 3 speed brushless impact, its very rare i use the impact since buying the drc about 6 months a go, it does everything better, the only downside is its bigger.
To those saying an impact will put screws in easier try putting in large ledger screws in with an impact then a drill on speed 1 - a drill will win everytime and you don't get all the noise.

Also with regards to makita batteries, I have been using them for over 5 years and a lot have failed in that time, I have always sent them back to makita and they have been replaced foc within days no questions asked.
I have not had any fail for about 12 months so I think they may have finally sorted out the problem with them.

Is the DRC comfy & light in your hand compared to an impact & do the batteries last long. Id assume the battery life would be excellent. I also really like the belt clips

Its quite a bit heavier and bulkier than an impact, the belt clip is ok on a trouser pocket but falls off if you hang it on a tool belt pocket but i tend to stick the whole drill in the tool belt pocket.

Battery life is very good

I just purchased 1 with the help of these comments! Already i am very happy with its performance! Light, powerful & quick. The light is very useful &
Its so good i sometimes use it as a torch when i find myself outside at night. I find it a great addition & another 2 batteries to add with the BHC TSC55 is very useful

Hey guys

Eventually getting round to buying the 18v festool. I got the Hilti te4 and impactor great bit of kit. Now time for the festool

I've noticed the drill has come down to low 300s recently with the 4.2a batteries. Full kit including angle chuck. Couple of questions before I dive in

I don't need the hanmer function but to get the drc model it's costing over 100 quid more for the same pdc package. I know the drc is slightly shorter and lighter but not by much. I'm wondering is there any real world difference apart from the pdc has the hammer but will never be used.

Is the price drop solely because there's a new 5.2a batterie out now.

Is there fakes going about would be my other concern.

As you say the DRC is slightly shorter in the body and therefore can be used in slightly tighter spots - not a lot in it though.  The DRC has slightly less 'play' in the drive shaft compared to the PDC which has to allow the hammer action to be turned on/off - again not a lot in it.

I would say that the PDC is slightly better balanced than the DRC - it would seem that the overall balance of the tool was set up for the PDC and then the DRC simply had the nose shortened / lightened by the removal of the hammer action.

I suspect that Festool has sold and hence made many more PDCs than DRCs as the selling price has been within £10 since release.  For £100 difference, if you can get the PDC that much cheaper - just get it as the benefits of the DRC are so minor.

There will simply be more 'old' (as in 4.2Ah battery) PDCs in the sales channel than DRCs.

Love my PDC, was building a deck with it today and 4 inch screws were flying in on speed 2. Can't imagine many DRCs get sold these days because of the price difference.

I have owned my PDC for a while. And I quickly grew to love it as a drill driver. My only hang up was the weight of the thing. It's not that it's SO heavy, just that when using it all day on certain builds I wished it was a little lighter.

So when festool released the 2.6ah batteries I jumped on the chance to get a 'lighter PDC'

Below is my PDC next to the DRC + 26.ah battery. Love it!!

Does anyone know if the DRC/PDC are the highest speed cordless drills or not?  I haven't seen anything close.

Fein Ascm 18 has similar specs to the pdc.  The Fein doesnt have a hammer option.

The Fein has 50% more torque, I'm not sure that makes it similar at all.

Unfortunately, the Fein's clutch and trigger get a lot of complaints.

Fein ASCM 18 QX 4 speed Drill / Drivers

Again with the Amazon reviews.  [tongue]

Here's a solid scientifically proven negative about the Fein:

1. Investigate what specifically isn't covered under 3 year warranty.
2. Peep the prices on the individual batteries and charger.

Fein definitely has an 18V hammer drill called: ASB 18.
