20mm hole on a 96mm grid system (MFT top style)

Regretably I can only do woodwork once or twice a year for about 6 weeks. >:(  This however gives me ample planning time.

I have made a 30mm hole on a 96mm grid template designed to make a top for my workbench.

On this trip to Thailand I had planned to construct Sawhorse/Workbenches inspired by the DeSoto model, modified for local materials.

They used to be at iedu com-DeSoto-Projects-SawHorse  But the owner Morris Dovey has deleted the links and will not (the last time I asked) give permission to republish them.I

"At the moment (Jan 2012) you can find a Photo at  3 Legged Sawhorse "

That link is now dead however the page is now at 3 Legged Sawhorse Dated Feb 2013, (as of November 2013 the link above now has full plans and pics new modification)

Not having soft wood available at any reasonable cost I had to use available hardwood. :) The first modification I made was to add supports under the top while doing this I added a 20mm hole to enable a removable rail.

I also added a 20mmx96mm set of holes designed to add an adjustable hight top or a base to support other work.

The next modification was serendipitous I found the top width was just enough to permit another 2 sets of 20mmx96mm holes. this was inspired by the DeSoto SawHorse.

my lack of clamps, and the cost of them in Thailand.

I realised that with 20mm pegs my bench tools would not need clamps to hold them.

I also made a temporary assembly top.

The next item was a scissor lift topped with a rollerball set to act as an adjustable material support. After forgetting to use the 96mm spacing so needing to add a 3rd hole I found that it will lock onto any of the 96mm grid components.

The last of the components for this session was a transportable assembly/work top.
Originally a test of the template (I found two sets of holes are off by between 2 and 5mm )

I decided to make it a full test of my main workbench top.

I have found that the more items I make with the 20mmx96mm grid the more useful it becomes.

here are a couple of new items adding to the 96mm grid system

The first enables me to mount tools easily, at least those that don't need bolting down.

Tool base stand, which rotates to become a miter saw stand.
