Looking for a 20mm router bit for a MFT project. Search found products from CMT and Festool but, looking for distributors of this product. Any Ideas?

Welcome to the FOG!  You should be able to get the Festool bit thru any Festool dealer.  The  (  Festool USA Website has a dealer locator function.  Additionally there are numerous internet dealers, some of which participate here.  If you scroll down to the bottom of the FOG home page and see a name in blue then you usually will have found a dealer.

I ordered the Festool 20mm bit from Uncle Bob and received it a few hours ago. It looks more like a fostner bit than a router bit.  It really is designed for boring out a clean 20mm hole..

Here's one of my new box beams made with the festool 20 mm bit (and lots of 4 mm dominoes!)

I really like those box beams. Did you cover them anywhere else in the forum or this there first appearance?

Is it really wise to use a forstner bit in a plunge router? I would think the rotation speed of the router is much to high for a forstner bit?

Oops you're right, I stand corrected. It's a fine straight bit of course, the profile isn't that good for plunging those holes the OP wanted. Good catch!

Hey Eoghan,
Either of these ought to work, if you're just looking for a straight bit, 1/4" shank only though...:

I've used the CMT before, it's a good bit.

I have to disagree. Pls see my thread comparing the two types of bits. That straight bit ain't for plunging.

Those CMT bits are meant for boring machines.

The Festool bit I mentioned and the CMT bit that Michael linked to are both hinge boring bits. The Festool bit is for routers and has an 8 mm shaft. The CMT bit is meant for boring machines and has a 10 mm shaft.

Oops... the 10mm shaft spec slipped by me.

I don't have that CMT bit but I do have the Festool bit and while it does bore a clean hole quickly the hole is about .2mm oversize so things like Qwas dogs fit a little loose. But, it's made for drilling holes that cast hardware will be inserted into and for for that purpose slightly over-sized is a good thing.

Well...please notice that Michael and I are not referring to the same CMT part no. The one I'm referring to is a drill/router bit, part no. 392.200.11. According to the CMT catalogue I'm holding in my hand it's a boring bit for hand held drills AND ROUTERS and the shaft is 8 mm.

But it is correct, that Michael is referring to a boring bit part no. 317.200.11
...well according to his link it's a boring bit. But apart from the shaft diameter I don't know the difference.

But I can tell you that I have a lot of both Festool an CMT bits and I consider CMT to be high quality bits.

Kind regards
Henrik

Henrik,

I searched the 392.200.11 number and only came up with the boring bit (if I remember correctly).

Tom is a CMT dealer, I wonder if he can get the 392 router bit and how the price compares to the Festool bit.

...here's a snapshot from an online catalogue.

But I don't know if it's available in NA. Maybe Tom can answer.  ???

Kind regards
Henrik

The 392 series bits are NAINA. CMT doesn't offer 8 mm shaft bits here normally.
