I think there is space in your workflow for a midi. Having tool activated power is a nice convenience, you'll need the ability to turn it down when sanding and it's obviously more portable as you stated.

But, I'm not sure you'll want to get rid of the 1450. I don't have the specs in front of me, but I imagine it will have more suck and therefore be a little more suitable with the floor standing equipment. But, you have 30 days with the midi to try it out and see what you think. If it's not sufficient, send it back or just keep it for the handheld power tools.

The good thing about the Festool DE is they all have the same motor specs!!  The rest is all capacity.  Stating you have no capacity issue, you could even buy a mini!!  I have a mini that i use on the site, and a 36 for the shop. I notice no difference in collection abilities between the 2, except i use a larger hose in the shop and get better collection on the kapex in shop.  I even use it WITHOUT chip collection on my thickness planer with the ( i think it's called_) long life bag, i can open and empty and put right back.  The biggest difference you're going to notice is how fine the finish is when sanding!  Turn the suction down to ~15% and see how fantastic the sanding is!!  Not to mention how much LESS sanding you'll need to do to get to this new awesome level of smoothness.  Also, like the previous poster, there's really very little worry in the purchase because if you don't like it; send it back!!

The older MIDIs had 100 cfm motors, the new ones have 130 cfm ones.

Not sure how to tell the difference, and the inability to tell them apart is ultimately drove me to buy a new CT 26, where they all have the new motors. And having 3x the warranty (4x if you count on my AMEX extended warranty) on what would be my most used tool was a nice plus.

You're going to love not having to wear ear protection when using the midi by itself (obviously you still need it for the tools!).

+1 on the Midi.  For sanding only, the bags take a long time to fill.  The reduced noise level and adjustable suction will make you wonder why you waited so long!  [cool]

You will love the Festool DE, whichever one you get. I love my CT36 portability and the fact that you can stack systainers and wheel it around the shop. I have a big 1.5 horsepower dust extractor and keep a little Ridgid wet vac handy for wet only. I have an IVAC and it was handy on an old Ridgid I had but Festool's adjustable vacuum is a killer for sanding because you can set it for optimal DE. The power on remote feature is great although the filter bags are quite expensive. If you are going to use your Festool DE on a machine that creates a lot of dust you might consider a cyclone in front of the DE but this complicates the mechanics.
