OK I bought the Festool hole drilling jig so I now have a nice row of 5mm holes. I have  bunch of 12 inch euro-style slides.. that usually take 5/8 No. 6 screws. What should I be using to attach these slides to the carcase of my cabinets. The 5mm holes are too big. I am using Melamine Particle board for this project.. but also have a some projects what will be using ply and hardwood.

Thanks in advance.. I am sure this is a silly Q.. but ya gotta start somewhere.

You should be using 5mm system screws to align the slides, in the system holes on the slides.

I recently used the Lee Valley Euro screws together with 5 rows of 5mm holes to secure Lee Valley's 200 lb rated slides into a large storage cabinet I am building for my garage/shop.  The Euro screws fit perfectly into the 5mm holes.  In contrast, the 5mm shelf support pins sold by Rockler are a sloppy loose fit in those same holes.  Be certain to have the correct driver bit tip to fit these screws!  A Phillips driver will work but not nearly as well as the PosiDrive bit driver.

I bet they sent you the 1/4" shelf pins (or had some that were mis-marked).

I just ordered some euro hardware from McFeeley's.  I'll keep you posted...

Garry,

1/4 inch shelf pins should be too big to fit in 5mm holes. I think they have some other odd sized pins but I can't recall the actual spec for them.

Right, I got that backwards.  :-[  1/4" = 6.35mm Duh.

I am certain my 5mm shelf pins from Rockler are sold by them as 5mm.  They are definitely smaller than the 1/4 inch pins and other 1/4 inch shelf supports that I have in my collection.  Those older parts (some from Rockler's and some from other sources) all fit much more snugly in a cleanly drilled 1/4 inch hole, much like dominos fit in their mortises.  If I can remember to do so, I'll measure some of each type with my digital calipers, but I note that the smaller the bore size, the more significant is the effect of a couple of thousandths of slop.

I dont  know how well you can measure inside diameter of a 5mm hole. But you probably have a 5mm drill bit as part of one of the Festool sets. Use that as a feeler gauge of the hole.
