8mm Router Bits?

Can anyone suggest a good line of 8mm bits that are reasonably priced?  I have a 1010 and a 1400 and I'd like to have bits that I can use for both.

as stated - Lee Valley is a good source.

CMT has 8mm shank bits too.  They aren't easy/fast to get in the USA, but it's possible from a good dealer.

Whiteside has some 8mm shank bits in their catalog and will make anything you want to special order .  ($$$ though )

Leigh has dovetail and straight bits with 8mm shanks.

I've got a small set of AEG bits I picked up cheap in Europe on a trip, that are great for the price - but I'm guessing that's not an avenue available to you.

Bosch also make good bits for the money in 8mm - again not really available in USA.

Trend makes 8mm shank bits, but they are also hard to source in the USA.

If you're not in a production environment or aren't making cuts that have to be perfect in veneer ply that costs $$$$$/sheet - the no name bits on amazon with the red or yellow coating are decent bits ,  cheap, and come in 8mm shank.  If you're a prime member, you can have most in two days.  The ones I've got make good cuts outa the box , but they don't stay sharp as long as a premium bit.

Some of the Bosch ones are available as a set, from Amazon UK, though they ship from Germany. That's how I got them. I don't recall the shipping cost, but it wasn't high, or I would  [big grin] It didn't take long for them to arrive either.

I get most of mine from Lee Valley, as previously mentioned above.

Axminster is my go-to for a lot of Metric. DHL shipping to US east coast generally takes a week total and free over $120. Great customer service to top it off.

The have private label bits as well as some brand names, but can't ship Festool to the US.

Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.es and Amazon.de (England, Spain and Germany) all honor your Amazon accounts in the USA.

The UK site is in English.  The Spain and Germany sites used to toggle between their languages and English.  The last time I visited those sites the translate feature was automatic.

All of them have vastly more options on metric tools and delivery charges were quite reasonable. You just order as you would with your regular Amazon account.

It is certainly worth a look.  I ordered a CMT dowel template from Amazon.de (Germany) and it shipped from Amazon.es (Spain).  So just one big happy family.

(Some CMT items are not imported to the USA.)

I ordered one from an Italian seller on Amazon.nl after asking a question in English and receiving an answer in Dutch. It shipped from Luxembourg.

Also had an anime porn pocketbook thrown in by Amazon.fr when they shipped in a part of my order from Amazon.de  [huh]

Many would consider Festool to be porn for the denizens of this forum.  And apparently the European Union is working very well commercially.

Oddly, Amana offers a line of metric bits, purported 8mm shanks and metric cutting diameters. Direct or from Amazon.

Labeled in Imperial...  [doh]

Thanks for all the replies.  They're very helpful.  Now, can you suggest a good size for a dovetail bit?

I forgot to mention it was in French language. I did have five years of French in school and my level is about "Take the 3rd exit on the roundabout and continue straight to the hospital"  [big grin]

I did notice the addition of the Festool-like router bit collet insertion depth marking. That'a a nice touch.

I wouldn't give credit for the depth marking to Festool.  My Bosch and ENT router cutters have similar depth markings.

That's good to know, maybe Bosch is also marking the diameter on their bits now?

I have a set (13) of older Bosch bits that have nothing marked on them except for the Bosch name and the Bosch part number. That has always been a real nuisance and periodically I have to remark the diameters as the Sharpie wears off.

I wonder what the 9/32 refers to...9/32 is actually 7.144 mm.  [eek]

I did notice the addition of the Festool-like router bit collet insertion depth marking. That'a a nice touch.

Hmmnnn, I was mobile and didn't math it, dunno.  [scratch chin]

More puzzling since 45215 is the correct part # on Amana's site. I actually bought this bit and it now seems to me the actual diameter was 5/16". Using it in the Shaper Origin that 5.25/100ths made a difference milling out 20mm dog holes.

Curiouser & curiouser...

I am not sure "language" is terribly relevant for porn.  Just guessing here, I am not an expert or even a C student.

I know this tangent is completely irrelevant to the topic being discussed.  8mm router bits.  But hey, its fun to talk, write, comment.

As do all of the Amana that I have.

And in a fit of consistency, Amana also labels this part number (45215) as 5/16"....

At least this is accurate. One of my current pet peeves are merchants helpfully selling me a bit as 5mm when it's actually 3/16". I wish they'd just trust me to figure out what I need.
