A Festool Headscratcher...or..."What were they thinking?"

When I got my OF1400 router, I was very pleased to see that Festool included the three collets most widely used within the set.  It came with 1/4", 1/2", and 8mm collets. Wonderful! I have bits for all three.

Then my OF2200 came along with the accessory kit. To my surprise, it came only with the 1/2" Collet.  Huh???

I thought Festool marketed itself as a "System", and considering that they want us to use their accessories and consumables on their tools, it seems awfully odd that they would only give you the 1/2" collet, especially considering that most Festool bits have 8mm shanks.  I don't think they even produce a 1/2" bit.

I certainly don't need a 1/4" collet for my 2200. The massive torque would probably snap them pretty easily, but I DO own a number of Festool Router Bits....and they are ALL 8mm.  The end result is that to keep in line with the Festool "System", the router does NOT just cost $900, but actually costs $943 because the 8mm collet is $43.  What were they thinking? [huh] [doh]

Oh well... I got one.

What's even more strange is that Festool produces router bits with 10mm & 12mm shanks. So I'd think the OF 2200 kit would be offered with 1/2", 8mm and 10mm collets as standard.

Yes, I was also surprised by the disparity of what was included with the OF 1400 versus the meager offerings and huge price difference on the 2200 that i received.  However the big router is really really nice so price is quickly forgotten.  And it handles superbly the huge bits that I'm getting from Amana.  Furthermore, I was very happy that certain extra things for the "big one" were included with certain CMS offerings.  So I guess it can go both ways.

The collets from your 1400 are the same collets as the 2200 uses unless you got a really old 1400.

When the 2200 came out, the collets used were a more "closed" design and they started using the same ones on the 1400.

Seems like a mistake, the OF 2200 I'm getting from a dealer in Germany comes with  8mm and 12mm collets..
