I really need to break down and build a mitre station.  My question for you all is, what is a good conservative length for a mitre station?

Just alittle background,  it is just a compound mitre saw, and not sliding.  I will not be owning a sliding in the foreseeable future if ever.  The work that gets done is from mouldings of all styles to small stuff in length and width.  Indo know the thickness or width would never exceed the blade itself.  I guess i am more wondering about the total length or the station itself.

I do work in my garage that is shared with my wifes car on one side and i get the other.  So having 8 feet on borh sides is totally out of the question.

So if you have suggestions I would love to know

You don't necessarily need 8 ft on both sides, just make sure you get a set up where you get it on one side. Then you can still make most if not all of your cuts. I'd prefer a minimum of 10 ft over an 8 ft length. You can also consider making the miter stand moveable with casters so that when the need for longer cuts arises you can move it slightly to get the clearing you need.

Place the 8 foot side near the garage door, so you can have long pieces sticking partly outside.

I once saw a picture of a workshop in a tiny shed in England.  The guy had a tiny window at the end of his cutting table so he could put long pieces of lumber half in and half out.

i would organise the shop so that you can use the space for the car as outfeed space . that way you can put the car out if needed and make the shop bigger.
i dont know what way the outside of the shop is but maybe you could put aq hole in th ewall and let the fence  stick outside. you could put it along a fence etc and box it off or put it in a 6,8,12"pipe etc .
