A look at the Systainer Midi.

Here's a quick look at the new Systainer Midi.  The Midi is wider than the normal Systainers.  At the moment the Midi is only offered in the Tanos brand and size 3 (the same height as the regular Sys 3).  Shane says we can expect Festool branded version(s) later this year.

The Midi Systainer works pretty much the same as a regular T-Loc Systainer (with some important exceptions and I'll get to those shortly).  They have the same T-Loc latching system so they can be stacked with all T-Loc Systainers and the Sys-Toolbox can be clipped on top of it.

The Midi is the same height as the regular Sys 3 (210mm/8 1/4") and 100mm/4" wider for a total width of 496mm/19 5/8".  As you can see in the photo above, larger tools like my Bosch reciprocating saw fit in it no problem. The downside to this size Midi Systainer is a little too deep for one tool such as a "sawzall", right angel drill, rotary/hammer drill.  If other size Midi Systainers become available I think they would be suited for storing these types of tools, and I hope we will see them in the future.

I intend to use my Midi as a catch all when I take my tools to the jobsite.  It will be nice to finally have a good way to carry some of the items that don't fit in a regular Systainer.

I mentioned some important compatibility exceptions.  The Midi is not directly mountable to the older classic Systainer, Sortainers, Workcenter, Sys-Cart, Sys-Roll, and the top of Festool dust extractors.  It is important to note the Midi can be used with all of these products as long as a regular T-Loc Systainer is first attached and then the Midi.  For example, you can attach a regular T-Loc Systainer to a Festool dust extractor, then on top of the T-Loc, you can stack the Midi.

Even with drawbacks I think the Midi is a great addition to the Systainer lineup.  I'll be even happier if we see more sizes become available.

Brice, do you think a big angle grinder (230mm/9'') fits in there?

Sorry Alex but I have no idea how big any given 230mm grinder is.  The best answer I can give is maybe. [tongue]

Wonder what new tool could be the motivation behind this new, larger offering?    [scratch chin]

I'd guess it's nothing new, the Domino XL and maybe a cordless set of some kind.

Yeah, I was thinking cordless set.

Overall the Midi - Sys looks pretty useful. Definitely better than the Maxi concept system wise.

Yes and no. It fits without disc guard. Removing that is not practical.

The whole Protool range, when the midi was announced i speculated that it had something to do with bigger tools from Festool.
Now we know Protool is going to be rebranded in Festool, the medium sized Protools currently come in a box without systainer. this was probably not acceptable for Festool.

I was initially dubious about the benefit of a midi systainer, why would festool bring out a systainer so you can put larger non Festools in systainers. Now it's clear that the main goal is to store their own new range. In that perspective i think it is a good move, better an over sized systainer than nothing.

One thing about Festool and TTS's other companies is that they are very ecologically minded.  I know that there could be some who would argue that making a plastic box for a tool versus a cardboard box would be anti-green, but when the container is designed to be used and reused for years or decades, then it becomes more so.

I look forward to the Midi.  Some many times I have thought about the Maxi system and trying to integrate one of more tool into it, but every time the carrying position of turning it sideways and flipping everything around just made me say no.

Yeah, I could see a lot of things going in these.  It will make it easier for all tools to be in Systainers. As far as integration with the regular size. They latch to them easily, and even that won't matter as much if several Midis are connected in their own stack.

Sweet! thanks for sharing! I have some big plans for the midi's for the tools that require that extra length. Im more excited to be able to fit my outdoor speaker demo kit in one, i cant keep it in the van because its in one of those big pelican cases and it doesn't fit anywhere comfortably in the van. will be nice to consolidate it into two midi's so I can keep on the van and not have to make a second trip out to demo the system  [big grin]
