Hello Foggers,
Built this Storage shelf with baltic birch and all shelves and misc. pieces are joined with dominos. As no screws are being used I will need to glue this up. My question is, if I pre-finish the pieces with General Finished High Performance top coat what glue would I use to glue the shelves in place. I'm concerned the glue will not stick to the pre-finished sides. Hopefully this make sense.
Thanks in advance,
JC

Tape off wherever you don't want the finish. Spray, carefully sand the edge of the tape along the top to break the finish film or cut with razor blade, remove tape, glue up.

If you want to try a glue, the only two I know of that have any chance of sticking to the finish are Roo glue and Titebond Melamine glue.

Thanks Tom. Was thinking of Titebond Melamine Glue. I do have some, maybe I should do a test.
Cheers,

I won't waste my money on Titebond products anymore, IMHO too many don't live up to what they say and their melamine glue is no different. I've tested a few different glues over the years and found this one unbeatable for strength of connection with regards to painted surfaces. Kleiberit glues really work better. The funny thing is in most cases they are less expensive then the others.

I hear what you're saying with some of the products they sell, but Titebond III, IMO is a superb product.

I think Titebond III has been reformulated recently.  Last few bottles I have used (I use a lot!) have been much thicker than 'normal' and seem to need a good shaking before use, lest the first squeeze is watery.  At first I thought maybe the glue had been frozen, but different bottles from different retailers all perform the same.

In any case, I haven't seen any change in performance.  It works well.  I do bended laminations which stress any glue and TBIII seems to work well.

I found the Titebond website support to be extremely helpful when I had questions about applications for their product. I'd suggest contacting them if you believe that there was some issue with that particular glue. I haven't used III recently as I've gone to Titebond II Extend which also has Type II water resistance (a white glue). The nice thing about Extend is you get longer open/assembly time for more complex pieces that have a lot of glue joints (a lot of Dominos). Anyway they were helpful.

Are you using dominos to join the side to the shelf ends?
For connecting melamine components without screws I will just glue biscuits or dominos with yellow glue. Works well.
I agree with John the Kleiberit glue is much better than the Titebond glue.

Hi Tim,
Yes the shelves are joined with dominos. Which Kleiberit glue is good for cabinet assembly. I was on their web site and they do have many products and I found it difficult to find the glue type I would use for cabinet assemebly and general glueing of wood.
Thanks,

Titebond's marketing is superb, tell people what they want to hear. In their defense it pretty hard to screw up the simple glues that everyone needs. I typically have no need for the water resistance advertised in Titebond 3 or the extra cost. The specialty glues are another thing, I call BS on their extend products and their melamine glue gives a weak joint. The product is also ridiculously expensive this side of the border. I used it for a few years early on, now I don't. What you use is up to you, just don't believe all the BS.

This is the glue you asked about.

Thanks John.
Tom, I recently got my own account. Had to convince them that I cut wood for a living. They didn't like my company name " Online Technologies". After a few photos and customer emails, they were convinced.

Cheers,

Pointing it out for those who cannot follow the links.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will be doing some experimenting in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, I decided to leave it plain and glue it up. As this is just a prototype, I didn't want to spend to much time on it. Posted it up to Facebook and sold 2 to one client withing 2 minutes of posting. I guess I'll be making a few of these.
Cheers,
JC

Hi Smiley,
I too make the full size locker. They are very popular. The ones in the photo are made with maple ply with 3 coats of lacquer. The bottom seat lifts up to reveal a storage area for the hockey bag.
Cheers,

I have issues with every one of their products as well, but I find they all serve their intended purpose as advertised when used appropriately, much like every other adhesive made by every other manufacturer on the planet. If you're gluing painted/finished surfaces then you're asking for an earlier failure no matter what you use.

JC, those are nice.
