Even when I don't mark all messages as "Read", they get marked as Read when I exit the FOG. Is that normal? Sometimes I don't get to read all the new messages and would like to be able to go back and read them later without searching for recent messages throughout the whole site.

I suspect you have your browser set to clear cookies/history/etc on exit. I'm pretty sure the forum uses a cookie to determine your most recently read post.

I'm on my Mac and I checked all the settings. Pop-ups aren't blocked and there are in excess of 2,600 cookies stored. I don't find a setting in Safari that would clear the cookies, etc. upon exit. I will keep looking though.

It seems to keep the unread messages on my PC using Google Chrome, so I imagine it is a setting. However, I do not have Safari set to block cookies nor delete them. I will keep looking and ask some people at work when I get a chance.

In Safari -> Preferences -> Privacy
what do you have checked under 'Cookies and website data'?

I'm not sure that's correct.  I have Firefox set to clear all cookies when I shut it down, and the next time I fire it up to get on the FOG, it knows what is new since the last time I was there.  I rather suspect there's a marker on each user record for last message read and another for last reply read.

There is nothing to check or uncheck but it shows 2,653 cookies and I have "never" checked under the Block Cookies section. The only thing I'm allowed to do is clear them. Otherwise it shows me a list of all cookies under Details. The FOG is one of th cookies listed as there.

So, when you come to the forum for the first time on a given day and click the "Unread" in the upper right, there's nothing shown?

No . . . Any new messages which accumulated since my last logout are there in both Replies and Unread. However, the other day I read only 2 messages in Unread and logged out. I logged in shortly after that again and found only a few new messages when there were at least 10 - 12 when I logged out previously. Since I only read 2, I would have expected there to be the remaining New that were there when I logged out plus any additional new that were posted since the logout. I did not hit the button to mark all messages read (sometimes I do but there were some there that I still wanted to read). I noticed that this does not occur on my PC using Google Chrome, but does on my MacAir laptop. I've checked Safari settings and can't see anything which would dump all cookies. In fact, there are cookies on the detail list for FOG, Festool, and one other Festool site. It's not a huge deal for me since I normally read all the new messages in both Unread and Replies during a single login. I will experiment with it some more and see if there is anything I am doing that is causing it. Since others don't seem to have problems, I wouldn't worry about it. It's most likely just me.

I'm pretty sure it just tracks the most recently read message. So if you click a post in unread it thinks you've seen everything up to that point.

That could explain it. I'll watch. It is possible that, on some occasions, I have picked the most recent message and, according to your response, that would mean all the rest would be gone when I logout.

I would prefer that it work by just marking those read that I have really read; like email. I'll just monitor. Like I said, most of the time, I dump the others anyway as they are not of interest to me.

Yes . . . to use them. I miss them when I don't.

I typically just stayed logged in the FOG, but I logged out to try this.

While I was logged in I read all my replies, then went to the unread messages list. I read a few that caught my eye, then specifically chose to read the top one and the bottom one on the list. I then logged out of the forum, knowing that the system would have flagged me as having read both the oldest and newest 'unread' messages. There were 10 message that remained unread.

When I logged back in, I had no new Replies to threads I had posted in, which is the behavior I would have expected. When I checked unread messages, there were actually 11 of them - the 10 that I intentionally left unread, plus one new one that had gotten posted in the meantime. Again, this is the behavior I would have expected. This was all done using Safari 8.0 on the Mac, btw.

Not sure what to say about what is going on for you, but it doesn't do that for me?

If it's enough of an irritant that you want to pursue it further, PM me and - with your permission, of course - I could remote into your computer and see if we can figure it out.

Thanks, but I usually read all the messages I am interested in and then mark all the other unread anyway. It's just once in awhile that I leave some for later. I'll just keep my eye on it.
