Alternative Legs for an MFT

Hi everyone,

I currently have an MFT/3 which I love using but struggle a little with the size of it so I am going to buy some of the 2m long extrusion (496824) to extend it. While Im at it I’m going to use the long extrusion of the current MFT as the end of the new one to get maximum capacity. I should point out I do not move the MFT so portability is not a concern.

As I am going to use the length of the MFT as the end the legs won’t fit. I was thinking of using some 8040 extrusion for legs but I have a feeling the slots won’t line up with the bolt holes in the MFT corner brackets.

Any suggestions or examples of people who have done this?

Cut the existing cross pieces in the middle. Find a suitable pipe to slip over the cross pieces to make them longer and with a couple of bolts problem solved.

If you go through old threads, you'll find lots of folks have built cabinet bases for their MFTs with the corner connector units of the MFTs resting on top of the cabinet. That would certainly work for what you're planning. You could use extrusions or just build a wooden cabinet with a plywood top. The spacing of the corner connectors will give you ample room to work clamps under the table.

For the cost of buying the long rails, you could sell your MFT and build one from scratch with extrusions and the Parf guide setup for drilling the top holes.

Here's what I would (and will eventually, when I find the time to mount the 2m rails I have sitting on my shelf):

Remove the legs and put them aside (with the original top and the short side extrusions) in case the MDT/3 needs to be revived.

Build a cabinet for below the new slightly enlarged table, with full extension slides to have the systainer collection tucked away neatly but one pull away. Likely with the systainers 90° rotated so there can be several sitting directly next to each other in a line on a drawer, to both fully use the increased depth of the table (even with it standing next to a wall) and being able to access all systainers on a drawer at the same time as their lids open toward the side (not toward the table, as with most sysport-like designs).

Problem will likely be to obtain full extension drawer slides that are deep enough (at least without having to sell a kidney or two), possibly I'll have to wait for a local dispensary to close so I can offer them to cheaply rid them of one of their nice old deep storage drawer cabinets... Different story in case you have enough room to access the build from all sides.

I love the look of that table it’s pretty much what I am after however in the UK where I am based the festool extrusion is approximately £250 but the aluminium extrusion seems quite expensive here for some reason. Also I would like the ability to use Festool accessories such as the CMS although this has been discontinued now.
