American TV - So Infuriating!!!

Being a telly addict, I download & watch a lot of US TV shows. Some of them do make it here eventually, but it takes a long time sometimes...

Anyway, have been watching some of the new shows that sound interesting - the best of which was the pilot of 'Lone Star' - it was a great premise, well acted, well directed, and I though well written (and it wasn't about doctors, police officers or vampires, which in itself makes it pretty unique!).

Downloaded episode 2 yesterday, haven't even watched it yet, and read that the show has already been cancelled!!! After 2 episodes!!!

Why do they always cancel the best shows?

On the plus side though, I've only wasted 45 minutes of my life on it. Usually I really get into a show in the first season, only find out it hasn't been renewed (eg Firefly, Flash Forward, Gravity, Threshold, Accidentally On Purpose, Journeyman, Justice, Commander in Chief, Father of the Pride - I could go on)...

Tell me about it , I got into watching one called invasion I think it was on bbc or 5 not sure it was a few years back but half way through it just stopped then I found out that had been cancelled  [mad]

Jonny,

Unfortunately, television is just like any other business.  It's all about the numbers.  Quality programs are often canceled due to poor ratings while others that may be mindless drivel receive good ratings and continue on.  Look at most of the so called reality programming.

Unless the way they are determined has changed, ratings in the US are based on the viewing habits of about 1,100 families.

Cancelling Firefly was a tragedy. Worse yet, after they found it was popular, made a movie, they still did not bring it back. Whoever cancelled that needs to be taken outside and be "de-kneecaped."

I've heard that Flashforward was "put on hold" because it clashed with vampire diaries... Why is it teenage girls always seem to have so much pull. I tried watching one episode and nearly committed seppuku with my nearby leatherman. Flashforward is on another plain and yet it gets ousted by by that? Makes me sad.

I've also got a list of greats that were cancelled. It's just not right. I know it's a business but still.

At least they haven't cancelled True Blood or Big Bang Theory...yet

+1 on the bewilderment about why Firefly was cancelled...absolutely awesome show.

Well, at least I wouldn't have to explain why I don't watch American TV to this crowd :)

Reality TV makes me throw up a little inside.

Are there any good woodworking shows anymore? I was a big fan of David Marks' show and of course Norm.

I think I've been watching the new TOH season. Roxberry is it?

Years ago I really enjoyed 'This Old House' and Norm Abrahams 'New Yankee Workshop' and there was another one where the couple built a huge log cabin, he seemed to change female co-presenters like underwear! the shows were of interest though. Sadly the shows were on cable feed in Milton Keynes and they decided we had to pay for channels we had no want for in order to continue getting those programs. We declined their thieving offer and cancelled our subscription. Never had satelite or cable t.v. since and really don't miss it. Much of it gets on terrestial t.v. or available on the net.
Besides, some of the forum threads on-line can be either more informative or (dare I say it) more entertaining!  ;D ;D [wink]
