Anyone have a clue what this is?

One of the guys at work showed me this little cube this afternoon. He said it was mixed in with a bunch of tools that were given to him, when his grandfather passed.
I'm totally stumped. It's about 1 1/4 inches with a recessed circle on each face. Black and white on opposing ends with a primary red, primary yellow, the blue is very dark, and the normal medium green (secondary) as the forth side. It appears to be wooden, with silver paint.
The little yellow plastic box is even more confusing. If it was something simple like a die for a game, why would it need its own box? The corners seem too crisp for something intended to be rolled?
It could be something very common to some people, but I have never seen anything like this.

I was thinking some type of block gauge. But you say it is made of wood? Was said grandfather a woodworker? Could it be he started a project like a Rubik's cube?

Kind regards,
Oliver

Yes, Oliver, it is wooden and painted, the silver part anyway. The colored dots are some sort of plastic.
The yellow plastic box is the confusing part. It fits in there perfectly.

The knowledge shared and accessible here is incredible!

Wow!

Kind regards,

That's exactly why I asked it here. There's an international crowd who has the potential to hav been exposed to darn near everything.

Thank you Ron
