Apple I Pad

Hey, whatever works  ;)  new toys rule.
Let me know how it performs when you get it, i really fancy one.

Woodguy

Woodguy,

I will be happy to review it here.  I have absolutely no business buying one, but looking beyond the hype surrounding it, I imagine that based  on my anticipated usage, it should pay for itself within 2 months if I use it like I should.

Only time will tell!

Peter

Well Peter,
The 3G models started to ship - did you get your ipad?

I decided that since I don't travel very often I would be fine without the 3G capabilities (plus I wouldn't have to worry about giving AT&T any more of my money).  So I stopped by Best Buy yesterday and bought a 32GB ipad.  I wanted the camera kit and a case for it but they didn't have any in stock.  I ended up ordering a case from Marware.

So far the only things I don't like about it is the lack of a USB port (hence the need for the camera kit) and, of course, I can't view flash websites.  It has an amazing display and is much faster than the iphone.

Let me know what you think of yours and what accessories you end up getting.

Tom

Tom,

Mine hasn't shipped yet.  Supposed to ship by the 7th.  My camera kit has shipped.

I am in the minority - I don't hate AT&T.  My reception is very poor at the house - I consider that a blessing.  I also know every dead zone between home and where I normally go.  I will start out with the cheap plan and then see what happens.  I am going to kill off two business phone lines thru vonage and take the savings to pay for this.

I'll let you know.

Peter

I really don't have any issues with at&t either.

It is kind of pricey to have two phones and one being an iphone.

That's what I meant by not giving AT&T any more money.  I have an iPhone and my wife has a Blackberry so our cell phone bill is much more than what it was when we both had just voice plans.  I get good service at my house, but it varies at work.  Some days I'll have a good signal and some days I'll have no service.

Tom.

There are those days when I wish that I still had a pager and had to look for payphones  [scared].  You guys do remember pay phones don't you? And the patience people had for someone to return a message with a phone call?  When they were able versus when someone wanted it?  And when a message said that I was unavailable - it meant do not bother me anymore?  Texting was a misspelled word?

Tom, I totally understand your position.  Please don't take any of the previous statement as a negative.  My communication costs has skyrocketed over the last three years and will continue to do so.  I was talking to someone who had attended a seminar for businesses regarding social networking and the benefits.  He was so excited.  I asked him if they had brought employee costs into the discussion.  He asked me what I was talking about.  I gave him my view that all the instant information was great, but it still required someone to type, monitor, respond, update, etc.

Nope!  I guess that the old saying that nothing is free is true.

Peter

Well - it looks beautiful, great design as normal.

A lot of the apps look great - a direct finger stylus / based tool like sketchup might just make it compulsive...

2 issues for me
  • the costs have translating it into English have been very high - so there's a 50% markup in the UK
I think the size is wrong, if I spent a lot of times in planes - I imagine it would be great; living near London - I spend several hours a day in overcrowded trains - for me a half size one would be very much more usable

I think I'll probably wait
there will be many devices with similar forms & functionality along shortly - I imagine someone like Asus will make something stylish & more sensibly priced
the mk2 iPad may also resolve some of the issues like multi-tasking given the mk4? iPhone has just gained that..

since there is no UK price announced for the iPad yet unless you mean the apps I don't understand

Humm!! where is the "Asus" or any other iPhone with similar forms & functionality
Nothing yet except may be Android 3 years on.
So if you want to hold your breath for a couple of years and consider that as "shortly" !!!

If you remember that until the iPad shipped every one said, even Gates, there was no market for tablet devices and most had tried and dismally failed to produce anything that was less than an appalling failure.

Humm so if the price is 50% more then it will be GBP 596

Your math is not working well

US price $499 (NO TAX) about GBP 338 (EX VAT)

if you add 17.5% tax that would make it GBP 397 Inc 17.5% tax in the US as a direct comparison

So at GBP 429 that makes it GBP 32 more than in the US so it is about 8% more!!!!!!! that is hardly 50%

I'd just like to point out it wasn't my maths... [tongue]

It must be the Home counties fuzzie math kicking in [jawdrop] [drooling] {apple = much more expensive = 50 % more} Never mind the facts [tongue]

You lads up North would be sure to get it much closer [eek]

FWIW I must declare an interest as My UK home is a few miles south of John G's {Elton John's footie club is walking distance :o}

It just goes to show you can't trust what you read on the interneteven the FT  - and a number of other sources all made similar comments...

so bringing out my inner geek

USD:GBP	1.2763 as of 9th May FT

I stand corrected - although possible this says more about Sterling's exchange rate than my maths [embarassed]

But I'll stand by my other comments about size & multitasking - currently I use a Nokia N800
Plusses - perfect size to read an eBook (on a crowded train!) - very flexible range of multimedia apps, genuine multitasking
Minusses - battery life, performance, handwriting recognition, many of the interfaces don't cover the technology as elegantly as Apple

& evidently worse marketing than Apple...

I already curse iPod' ers (& other makes) who "share" their music via open-ear headphones on the train - will be interesting to see what happens when they need more elbow room [scared]

More seriously a decent sketching app would really pique my interest...

What I think it really shows is how bad the reporting is and that the so called reporters don't bother to check facts. And we the audence cant be bothered to give them the kickking they need.

As for the exchange rate Apple has tried to get the pricing much closer and this is a case where the extra probably covers the extra shipping cost. So alowing for that UK and US pricing is as near the same as you can get.

Peter

re autodesk - wow impressive demos - I got the feeling it was a highly talented artist - have you tried autodesk? What sort of results did you get?

I can do ok'ish technical drawing style sketches - altough these are also the type I've practiced most...  I'm not sure I could "see in my head" the outcome like that.

certainly that's the kind of app that would get me buying a tablet...

John,

I have not tried that application, but I am sitting here typing the reply on my IPad which arrived two days early.  I have to play with it, but so far the speed is good and the screen is beautiful.
