what work do you guys use them for?

my floor mounted pillar drill takes up floor space

the 12 inch bandsaw keeps mugs of tea or coffee off the floor

they dont do anything i cant do quicker by another method

Just out of curiosity, how do you re-saw 8" boards?  (or do you do anything along those lines?)

Tom,

"... the 12 inch bandsaw keeps mugs of tea or coffee off the floor..."

You may be right about the band saw.  That's what 8 foot, 400 pound work benches are for.

b-m, your question has answered mine, i dont do such things

at one stage i got a load of work on dragon beam end repairs (shaping the ends was a pain) i bought it in anticipation of more work. oh well

rwd, a 400lb bench to hold coffee cups? thats just plain exessive............. are you texan born?  ;)

Hey, Hey, Hey, I am not Texas born, but I like Texas.

;D  ;D  8)  8)

Haha, a scottish band, I believe Tom...did they ever make it over the pond..?

On a more serious note, what would the most common uses for a bandsaw be? Another beginners question, I'm afraid!

Mac,
Often times it is a tool waiting for use. Several come to mind: 1) when you have a precious slab of exotic wood and want to slice it for use in small chests; 2) cutting shapes to be pattern routed to get rid of as much extra wood as is possible; 3) bandsaw boxes. So it sits idle much of its time but never to store coffee cups.

Could you use it to cut tenons, too? I'm always embarrassed to ask what I suspect are really obvious questions.  ???

Mac,

John has pretty much said it all; the band saw and drill press are possibly the two most unappreciated machines in the shop.

Yes, you can cut tenons with a band saw.  You can cut pork chops, if you like.  I don't know about butter.

About the butter, I can confirm it's possible. I've done it :D Just make sure it is really cold like in the cold storage where I used to work.

A drill press is high on my wish list. Very handy tool.

I just baught a bandsaw and I am not sure how I lived without it.  I am constantly using it.  It really fills in the gaps were festool falls short for me.  I use it to rough out carving blanks to make thin rips cut homemade dominos etc.

Would not be without one now.
