Now, that I'm looking at electric planers to replace my old hand planes, I have naturally come across the very cool HL 850.  I don't have the tool in hand, so, I can't rig something up yet...(hint, hint) but it would certainly be nice if the Bench Unit - 485017 had an attachment to hook up to my MFT table or a UG extension - to use as an in-feed or out-feed table.

Hey Willy,
Yes, if and when I get one, I probably would have to do that, since it seems to take so long for something to finally arrive in our hands, here in NA.

Hi

Just a question. Do you really need a MFT as an infeed/outfeed for a 85mm wide planer? I personally would make a jig/infeed/outfeed the same width as the planer and the same height as the planer on the bench-unit. The length what ever you desire. This could then be placed/mounted on the MFT. Just my 2c

Hey man,
If you saw the size of my work area, then you would understand why I try to use the MFT for just about everything.  The MFT, the Kapex/CT 26 homemade bench-stand, and the CMS GE, leave me with almost no space for me!  (Consequently, I may be the world's best 50-something at the limbo!)  [doh]The MFT is used as my in-feed for my Kapex, CMS and lunch!
I'm thinking that it would be good to have an out-feed table for the HL 850 bench top for long pieces. 160 cm+

I'm making dinner so I am not going to go look, but I would venture a guess knowing those engineers that the 850 base height matches a systainer height.  Hmmm.....

Surprisingly no.  I didn't measure in mm, but it is about 7 1/2".

Oh, well.  If Festool gives me one, then I could rig up a way to have it match the height of the UG extensions or the MFT table...should I hold my breath?  [huh]

I can't find a smiley holding it's breath, but my thoughts are with.  And your family.  [poke]

Unfortunately the Systainers are different heights as Seth mentioned.  I can joint 3-4 feet material without too much trouble in the bench unit.  I think that is pretty good for a unit this size.

Matching the height of the infeed would be a little problematic as it changes dependking on how much material you are removing, just like the big guys.

As Greg said , matching the height can be tricky because it changes and needs to be super precise.

NYC.... I would say clamp the bench unit to your MFT, and place a roller support stand (or similar ) at each end of the MFT.  Use a long straight edge to adjust the stand height to align with the planer beds. Or let the stands be a tad shorter for general handling help.  I would think the stands should still work out pretty well for your small space.

My 850 pretty much lives in the bench unit and is usually clamped to the mft. I keep saying i'm going to make an in/out feed table to go around the bench unit but I just never have the time. My idea is to make the feed table roughly the length of the mft so it can be clamped to the mft along with the 850, surround the bench unit and attach at 1 or 2 points to make it secure. Sounds simple enough but I just don't have the time. Even have good sized sheet of steel that would work.
Another option I thought of was to make a box, sort of like the TS waiting station box some guys have made, that would hang off the end of the mft attached to the tracks. The top of the 850 would then be even with the surface of the mft. Once again time.
As someone else mentioned the stock set up works well for pieces 3-4 foot long. I've done longer pieces but it gets a bit rough.

Without the HL 850 and the bench unit in hand, it's hard to really come up with a workable idea. Yes, rigging up a stand could do...I was thinking of something locking into the side rails of the Mft.  For my current job, building a wine cabinet storage cabinet with a butcher block table, I may need to break down and buy the 850 if my jig to level the top of the butcher block with the OF1400 and jointing the sides with the CMS doesn't work.  The on-deck project of building a living room/dining room set may require the 850... But, I'm hoping to be able to joint with just the track saw and the CMS. I will only buy the 850 if I don't have another tool that will get the job done.  That's my typical modus operendi.

Exactly where will the endgrain be on this project? If the butcher block top is endgrain I don't think the 850 will work very well. I also think using the track saw for the sides is the way to go. Handling a BB on the CMS could be tough unless it is a lot smaller than I am imagining.

Greg Mann, the butcher block top is end grain.  The side height right now is 53mm. I have a 2 inch cutting length router bit on its way...I was thinking that after the top and bottom have been leveled, with the OF1400 and a simple sled jig, that the sides would be just under the CL of the bit and thereby- hopefully joint this baby just right.  Never jointed before with the CMS... But, I did stay at a Holiday Inn.

Only counts if it's Holiday Inn Express, and make sure you stay the night before!  [big grin]

I definitely feel your pain about the small work shop. Im using a UK size one car garage now.

Down from a Kalif 2 car garage.

I use a systainer for my infeed out feed. I dont remember the size but i have to open the lid to get the correct height.
