If the back and sides were on show I'd agree that a rabbet method would be my first choice, but glued, toe-nailed and clamped as oppose to screwed.
But for a project where it's all concealed I just think with modern methods like the Dominos or pocket holes and modern glues, means rabbets are just unnecessarily removing material and creating saw dust for no gain.
