Best Router

I am a home woodworker/ hobbiest looking for someone to tell me if the Festool 1010 router would be good for occasional use as a dovetail/ boxtail router. I have the vs 600 dovetail fixture with half blind and through templates. Are the guide bushings for the 1010 and the 1400 different?

It is a nice router and very capable for its size. You might also look at the 1400 for more power and slightly bigger form factor. The guides are different for each machine and both can accept standard template guides with the included adapter.

I own a 1010, but the other day when i searched for router bits, i´d wish i had the 1400 because of the broader offer. And, while the 1010 is nice to handle, sometimes i think the router could have a little more weight for some task. I am thinking of buying the 1400 as additional router for bigger cutter and collet diameter.
But if you only need the OF1010 for your work, i.e. if cuter and collet diameter are sufficient then i would take the OF1010, it is nice to handle and has much less weight.

Do you have a vacuum? And how important is dust collection?

If you are concerned with budget then a deWalt or Bosch may work too.
If dust is the major concern then the 1010/1400.

I have the 1010 and love it for my purposes but i think the 1400 is all around better for shop use. Ive heard the 1010 excels at dovetails and such so of thats all you need it for then go for it. But the 1400 has the larger collet, more power, quick detach chip catcher, etc.

The 1010 is my go to router for jobsite and shop work and has replaced my bosch colt trim router and partially replaced my Dewalt plunge router. Its amazing for edge work and light duty one-handed routing which is exactly what i got it for. But for an all around woodworking router i think the 1400 is a better choice.

    I would say the 1400 is a better all purpose router with the exception of the edging plate set up. I think the snap fit accessories and overall features are nicer too. Also the DC is better due to the over the top DC fitting instead of that small port in the base and can use the D36 hose.

The OF 1400 has the same issue right? Which model Leigh insert works with the OF 1400? Im going to order the 704R for the OF 1010 now and would like to grab them both.

EDIT: Scratch that. Looks like Leigh doesnt have a recommended on and state the one included with the router is the one to use.

True, but you are limited in the router bit diameter with this set-up and that can be limiting.

I owned an OF 1010 for several years before I bought an OF 1400.  Any dovetail work or LR32 shelf pin work I do is with the OF1010.  Of all the Leigh dovetail bits I have for my DR4 Pro, only 2 are 1/2", the others, which cove all my dovetail work are 1/4" or 8mm.  I'm not sure why I bought the OF 1400; it is nice, but I really never use it.

I would go with the OF1010; it seems perfect for what you have described.

It is the one and only hand held router I've ever used or owned. I will say that the edge triming and LR-32 attachments appear to be easier to use with the 1010. I have both accessories and have no problem using them with the 1400. If I recall correctly, the Festool router table is designed to accept the 1400 router.
