Best way to slot wood for art glass??

Greetings,

Looking for advise on putting a clean slot in solid wood for my glass art. I typically use 1/2 or 3/4 inch glass for my projects.  The last few I cut the slot with a track and my OF1400. I cut the slot and then dimensioned the piece to the size I wanted.

I was considering an mfs system as they seem pretty flexible. For smaller pieces the track saw is cumbersome. I have also experimented with the edge guide and it's a bit difficult due to narrow stock.

I am wondering if the slot could be cut on a router table with a guide block and stope set up?

Just thought I'd throw it out there for ideas. I am looking at cutting my labor time down as I sell the bases.

Thanks

Phil

Great ideas,

I like the mortising machine idea and another edge guide. That would save the chisel work I am doing at the end now.

Take all the ideas I can get.

A few pice of some of the completed work.

Thanks

Phil

"A few pice of some of the completed work."

Thanks for posting the pics.  My brother is a huge Chelsea fan - he lived in England for 30 years - so I was wondering if you have a website to sell items like that?

Steve,

Thanks for the compliment. That piece was a birthday present my brother-in-law asked me to make for his friend.

I actually contacted the Chelsea Football Club and was granted permission to make one piece. So I can't make them.

I will send them a note and see how licensing works but for now its a one off piece.

No website yet but its on the to do list.

I have a bunch of work on DropBox but thats about it.

Hi,

All my work is sand carved. I use photo resists for smaller more detailed work. I use a plotter for the bigger stuff like the Hillcrest Piece.

With the sand carving I can do just that carve the glass. Here is a picture of something more carved a banana plant. I also do hand made and polished ornaments.

I used to do a series of glass for the artist Robert Lyn Nelson. They were a halftone of his paintings on glass, in wood bases illuminated with Neon.

I don't know why it turns some of the pictures. If you download them it seems to save them correctly.

Nice stuff... [thumbs up] I also like the banana tree and the Hillcrest item.  [cool]

Is sand carving similar to how they engrave headstones by sandblasting?

Hey,

It is the same process as they use on headstones. For that they have heavier duty equipment but its the same theory.

I did order another edge guide today for the bases, but the Powermatic mortiser I think I'd like to get is backordered until the end of August it seems. Still looking.

I'll include a few pictures of the Wenge base I made for the Hillcrest piece. It was made of 8/4 Wenge, LED electronics including RF controller hidden in the right "foot". Finish is Tung/Danish oil.

Phil:  Thanks for the info.  Let me know if it is feasible.
Thanks,

Phil,
nice stuff you make.

I'd get one of these Bench Mortises for the ends and then plunge route the middle.

I'm at a loss how should this would give square inner corners on the ends of the slot... could someone enlighten me?

Hey all,

I had some time yesterday and made up a website for my glass art. Its new still so I guess spreading around the servers. It has been working pretty good but they said it may be 48 hours before its reliable, but seems to be working, if you type the name in. I'll try a hyperlink as well.

my website
hellscanyonartglass.com

It has more photos and information on the process.

Thanks again for the ideas on slotting the wood and the compliments.
