Hi Guy's,

I have a Powermatic 66. To say this machine is dialed in is the understatement of the year. Everything is very nice but I'm wondering about my toe out at the back or end of the fence. My miter slots are dead 0.000" to a Grasche test plate (more accurate than a blade). My fence when placed along either miter slot and flushed to the slot edge in the front of saw table is toed out away from the blade or 1/32" past the slot edge.

What is yours set at? Some prefer the fence dead parallel to the miter slot/blade. Why I bring this up is because when I rip longer pieces (say 4' and up) the material is off the fence at the rear or open. Shouldn't it remain tight to fence all the way even though the fence is toed to the right?

I'm thinking 1/32" is too much.

Thanks

Your fence should be adjustable.  On a true Bessy, there are two adjusters on the bottom.

It matters whether the fence is angled toward the blade (unacceptable and dangerous) or away from it.

1/32 would over a say 36 inch fence would produce an angle very slightly off 90 degrees in your cut.

My advice would be to cut as long a board as you would use in your work and see if it comes out square and parallel enough for the use you mean to put it to.

I set mine with a very small gap, I think less than 1/32 and the saw produces good square, straight, parallel cuts, at least good enough to make furniture with.

I have always set my fences parallel to the miter slot.
It has always worked very well for me.

Toe out should be .002 - .003 across a true 10" blade. Make sure to check the runout on your blade before adjusting.

That's the way I've done it as well.  Never had an issue.

I think .002" - .004" across a 10" blade comes pretty close to 1/32" along the length of the miter slot which is 28" long on the Powermatic 66. I used to set the fences parallel on my saws but had a couple close calls especially when ripping certain hardwoods, of course if the 66 had a riving knife I'd set it parallel. I might try 1/64" and I'll update here.

Thanks guy's.

I have mine setup like John .002-.003.  It seems to work well.

Don,
When you and John say .002-.003" you are talking about front of a fully raised blade to the fence and from the back of the fully raised blade to the fence right?...

My 1/32" is taken from the front of the miter slot to the fence and the rear of the miter slot to the fence, a distance of 28".

Thx.

Uhm.......  no, 1/32" is about three times that amount.  You will want to be more like 0.010" or less.
