This system from ESSVE is pretty cool. Not sure if it's available outside Sweden, though.

That is  a nice case. Individual modular boxes in a case but they also have individual lids. which  can be on or off while inside the case.

Plus the fastener manufacture sell the screws etc... in the containers that fit into the larger caring case. Very nice...

organized his various hardware in clear glass jars with the lids screwed to a shallow shelf

That's how I had mine organized until I got Tanos in the mix. I would screw the lids to the bottom of shelves and screw the jar on. When I knew which side was pointing toward the room once screwed tight, I'd mark that side with something easily identifiable. It usually was a label from the box, or whatever originally held the fasteners, taped to the jar. At a glance, I could find what I wanted if I'd forgotten where it was.

Since Tanos, my shelves don't have things hanging from their bottoms.

EDIT:
When I grew up, my father had all the screws, nuts, etc. in an ammunition box. Whenever we wanted something, I had to dump it out, find stuff, and then pick it all up again. I used to think that was normal...

My grandad had so much stuff that when he died we had to clear two

Buss loads (52 seaters) of buckets of straightened used nails, salvaged screws and every imaginable relic of 110V electric bits and bobs from switches to fuse boxes to breakers. All tidily organized but just so utterly obsolete (Finland converted last large 110V installation to 230V right after WW2).
