Tom...that's really cool.

What material did you make the plinth from?

Maple, the owner claims sitting on the maple the turntable sounds better.....

I love that...pretty tweaky. Maple vs Wenge vs Lignum Vitae vs Rhinoceros hooves ad infinitum. [big grin]

The plinth seems to be painted and naturally finished at the same time. I'm assuming all those naturally finished areas were masked?

Lol. Reminds me of this. Not the Nine o'clock News, HiFi shop.

No paint at all.

Blackened the maple, machined, then finished.

What are the speakers you are building comparable to? I have a BIC America surround sound system that I pieced together. And I want to either put the speakers I have now in hardwood cases or build my own.

Hi 5er,

What follows is a long winded reply that does not answer your question.

I've never listened to the speakers I'm building so I can't compare them to anything.  Fact is, I've probably only listened to a dozen or so speaker brands and I can't recall how any of them sounded.  I am building these on faith.  Bob Brines writes that they aren't great hard rock speakers.  I'm mellowing so that didn't concern me.

Surround sound and hi fidelity speakers are like Mars and Saturn.  They are both planets.  Surround sound drivers are for effects and dialog. 7.1+ channels.  HiFi is 2 channels with no processing.  With good speakers the soundstage will be apparent on two speakers.  My surround system has nice Paradigm speakers built in the ceiling.  Great for TV.

I don't advise using hardwood to build a speaker enclosure.  Why? Most importantly the density of the wood is inconsistent.  MDF and Ply have a consistent density.  Hardwood also moves over time and can/will develope small cracks that could affect the acoustical characteristics.  You could end up with two speakers that sound different.

The enclosure isn't just box that holds the speakers.  Cabinets should be engineered to match the drivers.  They contribute a lot to the voice of the overall speaker.  There is an incredible amount of math that goes into the design of a speaker enclosure.  Make sure you read the disclaimer below....

Best,

Luke

This thread tweaks my urge to dig out a relic I have tucked away .. A Thorens TD125 Mk2 with Shure SME3009 tone arm. The dturn table, arm, etc are in perfect condition, but the plinth needs love.
The tipping point is really the scarcity of spares - heart breaking if I put in the effort to bring it back to life and suddenly can't get a replacement belt or something

Does this look familiar....

This one's been quietly resting in the back of the closet for the last 45 years. She's a little dusty but certainly worthy of a modern day cartridge.

[member=44099]Cheese[/member] that's the old girl !! A mere 30 years since mine turned it's platter in anger [big grin]

Luke,
Don't forget the proper source material...long live Direct-to-Disc recording.  [big grin]

[eek]

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Also, can't believe there are other Festoolians out there that love hand tools + tww + Roubo + diyaudio  [big grin]

I have several aggressive design builds in the planning stages for some kick@$$ power amps all based on information from diyaudioDOTcom and Mr. Nelson Pass. After that will come speakers if I get that far  [embarassed]

Keep up the great work!!!!

Nelson Pass...I can't believe he's still around. He's only been designing amplifiers for the last 100 or so years... [big grin]

I hadn't talked to Tom Christiansen (The Professor) in some time so I emailed and told him of my endeavor to build the MLS's.  Here's his reply.

"I never actually built a pair of MLTLs. I did the math and called it good… :) I built two pairs of Siegfried Linkwitz LXmini speakers over the summer. One pair for me, one pair for a friend.  The dipole tweeter/mid is nice. For the bass, I’ll probably end up with a dipole speaker eventually. Maybe something like a NaO Note RS. I’ve listened to a friend’s LX521.4 setup. Epically awesome! That said, I think there’s further room for improvement. SL tends to take the designs 95 % there, but with a little extra attention to detail I think one can push more performance out of the design.

Dipole speakers don’t interact as much with the room as ordinary speakers. This means you don’t hear the room contribution as much and the sound quality improves. "

I havn't a clue.

I never knew PVC could sound so good  [tongue]

The Linkwitz Crossover has been on my build list for awhile now!

I was nervous about cutting out the holes for the baffles, and drivers.  The MFS400 was amazing.  It get's a little dodgy when you finish the cut because the router is a little unstable since the material is gone.  The first three were perfect but I nicked 2 out of the last three.  I highly recommend this Festool product.

I have the two driver openings and the small 3" port holes left.  I'll use a Rockler template for those.
