Eiji, old friend, what have you been up too???  Long time no posts.  How is business?

This is an old thread Ron.  Eiji's post was from four years ago and he hasn't logged in for about two years now.

I have broken 2 bits each was a 5mm as it is the one I use the most. I typically use oak and maple with an occasional walnut. I am told it is not that uncommon with the 5mm bits. Have not had any issues with the 4-6 or 8. I Al's do not always plunge at the same speed although I try to be consistent.

I'm glad this old thread came back to life actually.  I've done thousands of plunges so far, and mostly with the 5mm bit and have not broken one yet so I must be doing something right I guess, but what i did not know was that often the other reason for bits breaking is in trying to widen an existing mortise, which does happen to me along with realigning one where the initial plunge was not in line with the others.  Good to know to try to stay away from those one-offs and/or to be very ginger in executing those kinds of plunges.
