Campaign style side table

Hi

This is my first attempt at furniture after too long away, mainly doing my house and wood working within.

I made this using mainly festool, kapex, ts55, 1400 & rotex along with my new Jet 260 planer thicknesser

I used domino joints for the majority and made several mistake which i will not be making on the second one

made to fit beside my sofa and to store, remotes etc and laptop and magazines on the shelves

its made from mahogany and i liked the challenge of the joints aligning as to hide 95% of the end grain

its got a antique wax finish so far, needs polishing and then a hard clear coat to go

Very nice work and well proportioned.  How did you attach the shelves to the legs?  I wonder what kind of clear coat are you going to be able to use over a wax finish?

In truth I was nervous as it was my first piece of furiture for a long time

No, it wasn't my own design, I wish. It is one my wife saw in a furiture shop and they wanted £450 for each one

I should of taken a picture of the leg attachment method, I made 2 jigs so I could use the domino at 44 degrees to the leg and also the shelf if that makes sense. Took a while but now I have it for any more I do.

As for clear coat, I have 6 different products that I have in the testing stage to see how they handle the wax. They vary from shellac, varnish, a type of clear epoxy and two others that my grandfather who was a master decorator wrote in his note books that i am testing.

I'm not 100% sure of a clear coat as I want to see what effect they have on the wax

Please keep us informed of your successes AND failures. I like the look of wax finishes, but have always worried about durability. I'd love to learn what your experiences are in case I consider doing this in the future.

Adrian,

I envy you having the notebook from a Master and look forward to your other projects.  My experience is that not much will adhere to wax but, shellac might have a chance and if you can cure shellac over your wax finish you can use something like General Finishes Arm-R-Seal varnish over the shellac.  I'm not sure why you would want to put a clear coat on such a fine finish that you already have?  I have end tables that have survived almost 50 years and two sons and friends with just a shellac finish (with cup holders).  Repairs were easy when necessary but seldom needed.
