Can I Sand My In-Place Banister/Newel Posts/Balusters With the RO150

I would wait 2-3 years and use my time on other projects. It will be very time consuming to get it perfectly down to bare wood and re stain it. You will probably have to touch up the spindles as they are going to take a hit during the project.

Great advice everybody! thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I think I will scuff and paint vs. completely sand and stain since I will hopefully redo in a few years.

I was at my festool dealer today picking up some supplies. Wife said go ahead and buy the RO90 so yahoo!!!!

I am blown away at the small, tight areas I can get that into. Thanks for your wisdom, I think this is the one for the job (and other jobs I never imagined).

I just installed some crown and post installation noticed it dipped in a couple places. Using the ro90 I was able to scribe the crown to fit after it had been installed!!!

Way cool!

..So I am finally planned to sand this down.  And re-stain these handrails. (spindles can wait)

Now that I have the RO90 (thanks to your advice), I hope I am ready to do this.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does stacking interface pads mean?  (I am picturing two interface pads stacking on top of each other?).

I plan to run to my dealer tomorrow to buy what I need to get this party started.

I was planning on sanding with 150 grit Granat (I was worried that 80 grit may be too aggressive in my hands).

Once it was sanded, I was planning to use a wipe on gel (something like General Finishes), which I assume I will need to wipe on poly after staining.  (I am thinking the gel route to eliminate possible brush strokes).

I am very open to suggestions as finishing is over my head. (I am still confused if I would do rotex mode in this application, or if random orbit with a light touch and interface pad(s).  Thanks in advance for your help.

See a close-up that shows the contour.

Actually, RO90 with stacked interface pads would be pretty sweet on those.

Ok,

So I'm trying to figure out the stacked interface pads on the ro90 and I am coming up short.

When I look at the catalogue, the only pads that come in a set of 2 where pad stacking is mentioned is item 499 257, which is for the ro150. The pad offered for the ro90 is a single thicker pad (497 481), and nothing is noted about stacking the pads.

Am I missing something here?

I was trying hard to see a video of the ro90/stacked pads in action and found nothing. There is little online about this (at least that I could find).
