According to my profile, which I read following a comment from KEV, referring to me as his French pal, I am in France, err don't think so, I am and have been working in France (or Spain depending which side of the road I'm on) since 2012 but I am in Sheffield; good old England, so can someone tell me "who" posted my profile as French.

The site uses geolocation to try to determine your location. It's not 100% accurate. You can edit your location yourself in your profile.

That is very interesting because I use leased lines for my internet connection as it allows me to log on to my server from all over Europe via WiFi so as I am currently in England it means my leased line is connected in France and then transferred back to England, no wonder it drops out all the time, BT tells me it is the weather in the UK causing my problems.

I use a VPN which frequently sees my search results come up as me being based in Belgium, server is based in the UK though, it's quite annoying.

Try this [member=56766]Big G[/member]https://dnsleaktest.com/ - should tell you where your connection is being reported as.

Question is, why does a blog need to know your location, and what other information are they taking, don't use google, amazon etc because on the occasions I did i was bombarded with advertising. Not in the UK but in America this type of information is sought after by marketing people.
Sorted out my issue; apparently BT use France Telecom for my EU connection on my lease lines.

Big Brother IS watching you.

This is not for marketing information, but for the other members to know so we can give you the best advice based on your location.

Festool offers different tools in different countries, and also their service departments can be different. There are also countries with 220v and others with 110v, which can also have great influence on the advice we need to give.

About geolocation in general: your IP is always send with anything you do on the net, and it's sort of like your home adress. Any website can see that IP and know where your computer is located. Unless you take active measures to hide your IP, like using a VPN or proxy server.

That may have been a tongue in cheek comment.

Fully understand what your saying but why did the FOG display my location without first advising me,  I am in the UK but the FOG decided to show I was in France.
Don't see why advice given depends on which voltage you use, AC ~ DC yes but not voltage

Well the Domino here was $750 more than buying it out Italy.
The advice via the location, was for me to spend the money where I was located..

I did buy the cord from the wall to the machine here. [embarassed]

And there are tools that are not made available in other countries, so the advice may be that they are not needed, rather than advice to order them from where they are available.

You reply to Kev did seem like it could have been French.

The FOG checked your location through your IP, which is probably from a server in France you use.

You can change the location displayed manually through your profile settings.

The voltage might make little difference in actual use, but this forum is about more than just using the tools. It is also about buying, maintainance, accessorising, having them serviced and getting spare parts.

If somebody wants a part number for a 110v coil it wouldn't be very helpful to give him the part number of the 220v coil.

The Plug-It power cords are different also. While the 220v cords seem to give little problem, the 110v cords are a constant source of questioning here on the forum.

And there's a large difference in the number of tools offered for both voltages and it's accessories, with the 110v line-up being only a sub-set of the 220v line. There are many answers relevant to 220v Festools, that are not to 110v. And vice versa.

I'd assumed that the advanced linguistic analytics of the FOG's forum had determined the ethnic origin of the poster based on the content of posts.

Heck, am I confused again? [sad]

Here is an excerpt from the forum guidelines:

"Country of Origin
This forum serves an international community of members.  Because products, services, terms and conditions vary from location to location, please provide your country of origin in your profile.  The FOG reserves the right to add the country of origin to your member profile based on your internet IP address.  This will help other members understand whether a post is applicable in their region."

[member=56766]Big G[/member] I totally get your concerns about privacy. We aren't doing anything with that information from a marketing standpoint. We want to know your country so that we (and other FOG members) can more accurately answer your questions. Some of our products differ from country to country. No shady dealings. I promise.
