carpenter aprons

I have a huge occidental framers pouch, I where it a ton. When its on I almost need to go through a door way side ways. I have been thinking about getting one of there trim pouches. A friend of mine who is a extremely high end trim carpenter swears by aprons. What do you guys think? I've been thinking about getting one of fast caps ballistic aprons. Is there any high end apron out there I did a search and came up with very little. Any help would be a plus.

I bought a Blaklader tool vest a little over a year ago.  It took me a while to remember to put it on , since I didn't wear tool belts or aprons while in my garage.

But now that I have been using it for so long it's the first thing I put on when I go into the shop.  I love it. 

It has a lot of pockets.  A double zipper.  Which is fantastic because when I wear it in the winter time and I have a thick sweater on the vest will

expand with the double zipper to fit better.  It's light weight, but built tough like all the other Blaklader gear.  And when I wear the tool vest with

the Blaklader work pants, I am a walking tool box.  I think I paid $50 for it give or take a couple bucks.  Might worth checking out if you have a chance.

I use an old-style, traditional carpenters apron and similar to Eric it is the first thing I reach for in the shop. Once I got used to using it I felt naked without it.

The pockets are very natural feeling after a while and unlike carpenters bags I rarely have to hunt for anything buried in them.

Grab a cheap one and give it a try, you can always upgrade if you like it.

I have used Bjornklader pants for the past year and have rarely used a tool belt in that time.  I use my Festool apron when doing projects in the shop.  I like that apron, it was a special product made by BucketBoss.  You can find the same basic apron at Woodcraft in the tan color.

I use the snickers tool vest you can custom the pockets you use there ideal for any carpentry job ill stick a link up later but I find them really good

Occidental makes several work vests.  One even has Clips for Bags.  I've been considering something different as well.  I have a set of Occidental Leather Trim bags and there still too wide for me to feel comfortable in most indoor locations.

I swear by the Bucket Boss "rear guard" - Occidental also makes a leather version, and Duluth trading has a version as well.  I pair it with a small clip on pouch for my tape, and sometimes a second pouch for screws if needed (or I switch to Skillers with their own pouches.)
We are often the last ones in a space, and can't afford to be back billed for scratches on finishes, so regular bags and belts with buckles are not allowed.

Another vote for the Blaklader vest.

The pouches are an integral part of the setup as erock's post shows.
They are positioned so that you can bend or stoop without having them spill or impede your motion.
The vest is light enough to wear in warm weather and loose enough to ventilate.
It's far more comfortable on the shoulders than a belt is on the hips.

I suspect it may be less money for what you get than most of the others.

I think you'd find that the FastCap ballistic apron would not be nearly as comfortable as a vest like the the Blaklader.

After many years of using an apron, I switched to a vest and was amazed at how much more comfortable it is to have the wieight spread over my shoulders compared to having it on skinny shoulder straps. Some aprons have a sort of belt that you can tighten around your waist to help take some of the weight off the shoulder straps, but, again, the vest is far more comfortable not having anything tight around your waist.

Aprons also typically have the pouches hanging right in the front, making it awkward to bend forward or stoop. The Blaklader vest has pouches on the sides and on back, so it's easy to bend and stoop.

I found this old apron in the basement and sewed some more slots for pencils. I also sewed in a plastic drinking straw as a guard for my awl.

I've been using this for the past few years and like it a lot.  The only reason I had to get a new one was because I had wiped so much glue, caulk, glaze, etc. on it that it looked incredibly unprofessional on site.
