Carvex broke. Seems like a weak part?

Unlike some I wasn't too unhappy with my Carvex 420, helped by removing the splinter guard so I could actually see what I was doing! Doing a loft conversion for my son, it was getting used a lot, cutting 2x4 nicely.

And then it broke. The blade holder sheared off the drive shaft. This exposed the detail of the internals of the holder and I was surprised by how thin it was. Looks like a sintered material has fractured, so maybe a casting, probably titanium.

So I guess I'll be testing for my first time UK Festool warranty/service!

Funny this post right now, I worked with a Carvex today for the first time, it belongs to my cousin and I was working on my aunt's house. It did the job but I also noticed how thin and flimsy it was compared to my own 20+ year old Metabo which is still going strong and feels like a tank.

Guy I worked with during my apprenticeship had a Metabo jigsaw, probably a build date of early 90's - that thing was incredible. Even the storage case was HEAVY duty!

I have a little used carvex 420 somewhere. Jigsaws aren't a tool I use all that much but when I do, I reach for my cordless makita first.

Hi [member=72891]AstroKeith[/member]

That is bad luck with the Carvex but I am sure the warranty will click in nicely.

I do a lot of rough work with my 8 year old PSC420. I too cut 4x2 either to get it on the roof rack or to get it in the workshop. I have also recently cut a real railway sleeper in the new garden. I am not sure what the wood was but is was very red, had an aromatic smell and was as tough as nails.

The machine is also brilliant for pruning branches which are too big for the loppers and when it is not worth getting the chainsaw out.

Despite 8 years of negligent use the machine still works well. The only thing that I now notice is that the pendulum does not always return to the position where it should line up with the blade ejector. Pushing the blade back into position is easy enough though.

Do let us know how the warranty works out.

Peter

So far I'm really impressed with the service support.

I went to "my tools' on the UK Festool website, scrolled down to the Carvex, selected "request a repair", and about a minute later I had a despatch note and UPS shipping label (prepaid by Festool).

Dropped it off at a UPS collection point yesterday morning, got an email to say that it had reached Festool UK at 9am today. At 13:30 I get an email to say its on its way back, fixed. 4 hour turn around! ETA back home Monday.

Think it shows the value of registering our tools at the point of purchase.
